Runners in central Virginia may have to give up a day or two of training as Hurricane Sandy’s winds and rain hit our area this evening.
Winds have picked up here in Lynchburg as Hurricane Sandy hit the shore in New Jersey around 6 p.m., further north than originally thought.
Runners from around the country are keeping an eye on the storm, now downgraded and being called Superstorm Sandy on Twitter. The NYC Marathon is scheduled to take place the first weekend in November. Keep an eye on the event’s website for any updates.
Over 600 women and girls participated in the I Am Woman 5K Run and Walk last weekend. This was a huge turnout for the biggest all female run in our area.
Ashley Palmer took first place with a time of 18:14. Samantha Schreiber took second with a time of 20:47. Kaitlyn McCauley took third with a time of 20:52. Visit the Riverside Runners website for full results from this event.
Running is a great way to stay in shape and to lose weight. Many women enjoy the sport and find that they have more endurance than they realized.
Runners who are ready to test their endurance can register now for the Crooked Road 24 Hour Ultra, to be held Nov. 17-18 at Waid Park in Rocky Mount, Va. According to the event website, you don’t have to run the entire 24 hours. Many runners just like to see how many miles they can run in the course of an entire day.
Many ultra runners are already registered for the Mountain Masochist Trail Run, which will start at Wildwood Campground in Monroe on Nov. 3. Registration is currently closed, but you can add your name to the list at the Eco-X website.
There’s plenty of good running during the month of November with running events almost every weekend and the perennial favorite Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning.
Earlier in the month, there are numerous events in Lynchburg, Roanoke and points nearby. On Nov. 3, the Apple Valley 5K will be held at Gross’ Orchard in Bedford. The cross country event starts at 10 a.m. with a tour of the course beginning at 8:30.
In Roanoke, the Big Lick Vet Trails & Trails Run will be held at 10 a.m. at North Cross School on Colonial Avenue. The 5K run and 1K walk allows runners to bring their dogs. Register here for this event.
On Nov. 10, many area runners will head to Snowflex Centre for the Valley View 5 Mile Trail Race, starting at 9 a.m. This event always attracts a lot of college runners so there will be plenty of competition.
In Roanoke, runners and walkers will hit the course at Jefferson College for the 5K Riverside Run & Wellness Walk, starting at 9 a.m. on Nov. 10. Visit the college website to register. This first time event will help SARA Inc. provide support to victims of sexual assault and abuse.
Nov. 17 is half marathon day in Roanoke. The Star City Half Marathon 10K Run & Walk will be held at 8 a.m. on Reserve Avenue. Visit the Star City Striders website to register.
Closer to home, the Girls on the Run of Central Virginia Celebration 5K will be held at Sweet Briar College at 9 a.m. Those who want to run with the girls can register at the event website.
Plan ahead for a fun run in December. The Jingle Bell Fun Run, held last year at Percival’s Island, will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 22 at Riverside Runners, 2480 Rivermont Avenue. Prizes will be awarded to those showing holiday spirit and you don’t have to register in advance.
