November 12, 2012 the Legendary Smokey Robinson performs “A Night with Smokey Robinson” at the UNCW Trask Coliseum, at 8:00 pm. The Box office opens at 6:00pm and the venue doors open at 6:00 pm.
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, born February 19, 1940, as William “Smokey” Robinson; years later he would be known to the world as “Smokey Robinson” or just “Smokey”, his unique sound would literally shape the word with music as a catalyst.
Robinson founded The Miracles while still in high school. The group was Berry Gordy’s first vocal group, and it was at Robinson’s suggestion that Gordy started the Motown Record dynasty.
Smokey Robinson is second to Berry Gordy in the founding of the Motown Empire. A prolific songwriter at best, “Smokey” is credited with over 4000 songs and 37 Top 40 hits including “Tears of a Clown”, “Tracks of My Tears” and “Love Machine”. “Smokey” is still a multi-talented force to be reckoned with, also served as vice president of Motown records, writing and producing hits for groups such as the Temptations (“My Girl”) and Mary Wells (“My Guy”).
One loyal listener was overheard saying: “Listening to the smooth, crooning sensational sounds of “Smokey”, it’s not hard to see why one titled for his music has been deemed “Baby-Making Music.” Years later “The Smoke” still brings it home, drawing in the masses to sell out performances nationwide and beyond!
