WASHINGTON D.C. ADVOCATES “TRANSGENDER AND GENDER IDENTITY RESPECT”
[Huffington Post] D.C.’s Office of Human Rights produced a five-ad campaign focusing on “Transgender And Gender Identity Respect.” The ads will be seen throughout the District this fall. Community members are featured on the ads along with quotes that describe personal details about being a Transgendered person. A participant, Ashley, said on one ad: “Some think I should dress like a woman. Some think I should dress like a man. I may not fit some ideas about gender, and I am a proud part of DC. Please treat me the same way any person would want to be treated: with courtesy and respect.” The primary goal of this campaign according to Gustavo Velasquez, Director of the D.C. Office of Human Rights, is “to reduce the discrimination faced by transgender and gender non-conforming people.” To receive more news and updates about this campaign, follow the exclusive Twitter hashtag #TransRespect.
WHAT DOES ANN COULTER KNOW ABOUT BEING BLACK?
[ABC News] Whoopi Goldberg called Ann Coulter out for her “bull” on Thursday’s episode of The View. The controversial, conservative political pundit was on the show to discuss her new book “Mugged: Racial Demagoguery from the Seventies to Obama.” Goldberg called on Coulter to “at least, know what you’re talking about” if she is going to talk about race. “What don’t I know?” Coulter asked. Goldberg growing increasingly agitated asked Coulter to tell her what she knew about being black and went on to say Coulter’s facts “are a little shaky.” On 2008 Presidential elections, Coulter believes: “The theme of 2008 was that it was historic and you’re a racist if you don’t vote for the first black president. Someone with his youth and lack of experience would not be elected if he was white.”
NAACP CALLS FOR UNITED NATIONS TO INVESTIGATE VOTER SUPPRESSION & DISENFRANCHISEMENT
[NAACP] An National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) delegation hosted a panel on the disenfranchisement of U.S. citizens in Geneva this week. The group addressed the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council and called for an investigation on America’s “racially discriminatory election laws.” Lorraine Miller, NAACP Chair for the National Board’s Advocacy and Policy Committee said, “Today, nearly 5.3. million U.S. citizens have been stripped of their voting rights on a temporary or permanent basis, including more than 4.4 million citizens who are no longer incarcerated. More than two million are African American, yet African Americans make up less than 13 percent of the U.S. population.”
OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS LEARN A LESSON IN TOLERANCE THROUGH REDDIT
[Colorlines] Reddit user “European_Douchebag” posted an image he took with his cameraphone of fellow student, Balpreet Kaur. The picture captured Kaur, a Sikh woman with facial hair, standing in line in what appears to be the university food court. The image was quickly gained traction as Reddit’s trending photo. Kaur’s friends quickly alerted her because she was unaware of any photo of her circulating the internet. Instead of overreacting, Kaur took her remarks to the comment thread on the image: “Yes, I’m a Sikh woman with facial hair. Yes, I realize that my gender is often confused and I look different than most women. However, baptized Sikhs believe in the sacredness of this body–it is a gift…and, must keep it intact…” An apology from “European_Douchebag” appeared on the comment thread a couple days later. The two are planning to meet very soon.
