Five friends looking for a weekend getaway head to a remote mountain cabin only to find nothing is as it seems. When the cellar door flings itself open and the group heads down to investigate they quickly realize something is wrong and they may have stepped into something from which they will never return.
Kristen Connolly (Dana), Chris Hemsworth (Curt), Anna Hutchison (Jules), Fran Kranz (Marty), Jesse Williams (Holden), Richard Jenkins (Sitterson), Bradley Whitford (Hadley), Brian White (Truman), Amy Acker (Lin).
This one starts off looking like a teen slasher flick as the friends head out for the typical cabin in the woods. Once there, things start to get more interesting though the film still looks pretty generic. Some nods to typical horror flick conventions and films keeps the story entertaining right up to the twists which bring a good dose of originality to the film and keep us glued to our seats to the end.
Acting was decent from most in this one. Kranz reminded us of Shaggy from Scooby Doo the entire time. Connolly and Hemsworth did well though the chemistry felt a little strange. Hutchison was decent, as was Williams. Jenkins and Whitford rounded things out nicely and brought good dimension to the characters.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all well done and consistent. CGI effects were nicely done and quite interesting at times. Physical effects and makeup were also well done. Dialogue was good and kept the story flowing well. Sound and soundtrack were good.
Overall The Cabin in the Woods is an entertaining and somewhat unusual horror flick. With a nod to previous horror films and conventions, this one proceeds to turn those ideas on their head. Add a few twists and things are even more entertaining. Those looking for something different will appreciate the effort.
With some mild nudity, drug use, sexuality, foul language, and plenty of violence with gore save this one for the oldest teens and above.
The Cabin in the Woods is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
