Halloween is all about fun, ghouls, ghosts and trick-or-treaters. Most homes with children enjoying this holiday also have pets. Although you may love to dress up the dogs and cats for fun, there are many hazards to consider when it comes to the four-legged kids. For your entire pet’s Halloween needs, contact your local Rockford-area Petsmart or Petco as listed below or one closest to your home.
It is never too much or too late to remind you about the hazards of candy and chocolate for both dogs and cats. Always keep these items far out of the reach of your pets. Another concern may be pumpkin and corn plants. They may not be toxic to your pet, but they can cause gastrointestinal upset and possible blockage if swallowed.
Never leave your pets outdoors during the hours of trick-or-treating. Not only will it stress out the pet but some kids may think it fun to tease your precious animal, and that includes the darling outdoor felines. Many pranksters like to especially pick on the infamous black cats because of their legends at Halloween. You are also putting your outdoor dog at risk for escaping and further dangers when kept outside during the festivities. Above all, your pet should be tagged or micro-chipped just in case of an accidental escape.
Monitor your pets and your festive décor. Jack-o-lanterns are a huge part of the Halloween season but a dog or cat can easily bump into them, knock them over and cause a fire. Wires from the holiday lights can get chewed on, harming your pets.
If you do choose to dress up your pet, be sure the costume is not constricting, too loose fitting or contains any small parts that can be swallowed. Try the costume on before the big day to be sure your pet is comfortable, kind of like a dress rehearsal.
Halloween can be as fun and memorable as you hope it to be, providing you take all the necessary precautions with and for the kids and family, which includes your precious pets.
