The Mitt Romney campaign has been canceling campaign events because of Hurricane Sandy. As President Barack Obama, the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA are working away to help those in need in this time of national crisis.
If Mitt Romney were President of the United States, he said he would shift those responsibilities now in the hands of Homeland Security and FEMA to the states. Then he would take it one step even further and send it “back” to the private sector.
In June of 2011, Mitt Romney was trying for the second time to win the Republican nomination and trying to get noticed from the crowded field. Romney was asked by CNN’s John King if he thinks disaster relief would be better handled by the states.
King asked, “FEMA is about to run out of money, and there are some people who say do it on a case-by-case basis and some people who say, you know, maybe we’re learning a lesson here that the states should take on more of this role. How do you deal with something like that?”
“Absolutely,” Romney said. “Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that’s the right direction. And if you can go even further, and send it back to the private sector, that’s even better.”
“Including disaster relief, though?” King asked.
“We cannot — we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids,” Romney said. “It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we’ll all be dead and gone before it’s paid off. It makes no sense at all.”
In that same debate, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) argued that argued that disaster relief should be the responsibility of local churches.
Notwithstanding Donald Trump silly “October Surprise” of offering President Obama $5 million if only he confesses that his college transcripts and college applications were false in some way, this is the real “October Surprise.”
It didn’t come from the vivid imagination of a delusional millionaire real estate mogul, with too much time on his hands.
It came from Mother Nature in the form of a Hurricane called Sandy. President Barack Obama is in Washington dealing with the “real” crisis for “real “people.” President Obama is engaged and constantly on the phone with governors, mayors and local disaster officials.
Mitt Romney truly believes that FEMA should be delegated to the states, apparently, and maybe even privatized. But should you ask any of the people in the path of this hurricane, that is not what they are thinking. They all need help. Certainly not from the states. Certainly not from private industry.
Most certainly not, as Ron Paul really truly, believes, the local churches. Ron Paul, the crazy uncle whom the family humors. But I bet Mitt Romney didn’t argue with Ron Paul at that time.
