The Gophers had their way with Colgate all weekend long, wrapping up the weekend with a 11-0 victory on Saturday evening. The Gophers really took it to Colgate goaltender Ashlynne Rando, putting 45 shots on her. At the opposite end, freshman Amanda Leveille made the first start in her college career and made 21 saves, getting the shutout.
Amanda Kessel had the game winning goal, scoring with just three minutes in on the power play. Hannah Brandt also kept up her scoring ways, putting in two goals in the first period. Meghan Lorence added her first goal of the season, giving the Gophers a 4-0 lead to end the first.
Minnesota would add two more goals in the second period. Kessel would get her second of the game and Maryanne Menefee would get her first goal as a Gopher. The Gophers piled on the shots, taking a 29-17 lead through two periods.
The goal festival continued in the third period. Menefee would get her second of the game, and then the defense would join in. Megan Bozek got her first of the season, followed by Jordyn Burns first as a Gopher, and then Mira Jalosuo’s second of the year. Meghan Lorence finished it off with her second of the game.
Brandt finished with six points, Kessel with five, Rachael Bona with four, and Menefee with four. 12 different Gophers had points in the game. All this without Sarah Davis and Kelly Terry, who missed the weekend because they were playing in Canada.
The Gophers made a strong case for a repeat with their offense output. Colgate isn’t a strong opponent, but they still destroyed a division one opponent. The most encouraging thing was that the young players made an impact. Hannah Brandt won’t get nine points every weekend, but she will be a big factor this year. She made a strong case for Player of the Week.
Next weekend the Gophers are at home again, hosting St. Cloud State in WCHA conference action.
In other WCHA action:
-Wisconsin had a tough time with Minnesota State all weekend. They skated to a draw on Friday and won 3-2 on Saturday.
-Ohio State started strong, winning 4-0 and 7-2 over Lindenwood.
-Minnesota-Duluth swept the Minnesota Whitecaps in exhibition play over the weekend, 5-2 and 5-3.
