First Lady Michelle Obama brought the house down last night at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. as she made a reflective speech about her last four years at the White House giving her husband high marks for remaining a deeply principled man .
The First Lady said that after watching him go through “so many struggles and triumphs,” being president “doesn’t change who you are, it reveals who you are.”
She went on to say she has no regrets for agreeing to put her family in the spotlight.
“Today, I have none of the worries from four years ago about whether Barack and I were doing what’s best for our girls.” She said her most important title is still being “mom-in-chief” and that she loves her husband more now that when they first met 23 years ago.
While the First Lady took the high-road not even mentioning her husband’s opponent former Republican Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Ted Strickland, Ohio’s former Governor and Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, didn’t hold back.
“Mitt Romney has so little economic patriotism that even his money needs a passport,” Strickland said. “It summers on the beaches of the Cayman Islands and winters on the slopes of the Swiss Alps. In Matthew, chapter 6, verse 21, the scriptures teach us that where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. My friends, any man who aspires to be our president should keep both his treasure and his heart in the United States of America. And it’s well past time for Mitt Romney to come clean with the American people. Governor Romney, just because you bank against the United States of America doesn’t mean the rest of us are willing to see her out,” Strickland added. “We are Americans.”
O’Malley also blasted Romney over his Swiss bank account.
“Instead of investing in America, they hide their money in Swiss bank accounts and ship our jobs to China,” O’Malley said. “Swiss bank accounts never built an American bridge. Swiss bank accounts don’t put cops on the beat or teachers in our classrooms. Swiss bank accounts never created American jobs!”
In keeping with the theme that President Obama is moving America forward, not back, O’Malley went on to defend the president.
“Facts are facts: No president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the Great Depression inherited a worse economy, bigger job losses or deeper problems from his predecessor,” O’Malley said. “But President Obama is moving America forward, not back.”
Reid attacked Romney for his refusal to release 12 years of tax information to the public.
“Never in modern American history has a presidential candidate tried so hard to hide himself from the people he hopes to serve,” Reid said during his speech at the convention. “When you look at the one tax return he has released, it’s obvious why. It’s obvious why there’s only been one. We learned that he pays a lower tax rate than middle class families. We learned he chose Swiss bank accounts and Cayman Islands tax shelters over American institutions. And we can only imagine what new secrets would be revealed if he showed the American people a dozen years of tax returns — like his father did.”
Tonight former President Bill Clinton will deliver a highly-anticipated nominating speech as Democrats formally name Obama as their candidate for re-election. Both President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will speak outdoors on Thursday at Charlotte’s Bank of America stadium bringing an end to the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
