McDonald’s Monopoly 20th Edition starts September 25, 2012 and goes to October 22, 2012. This article and the next, McDonald’s Monopoly part 2: Prizes & redemption dates, to help you cut though the fine print (at the bottom of this webpage) & Official Rules which are the source for all of my quotes for those keeping score.
Some may be pondering: where do those “1 in 4 wins” odds come from? According to the fine print,
“Odds are based on Game Pieces (each has 2 Game Stamps) ; mostly food prizes.”
So basically 1 in 8 stamps are probably going to earn you a food prize and hopefully some pieces that help you get a big prize. McDonald’s has posted on its Monopoly page 8 past million dollar winners ( just scroll down a bit and see them here) to give you extra hope at winning. Make sure to watch the video of Jonathan Kahoe. When he won the million dollars he was unemployed and, as seen in the video a year later, he’s still living comfortably. It’s a great story.
Many big games have said it, but the majority of people don’t think much of it: no purchase necessary. So here is the process for McDonald’s 20th Edition Monopoly’s “alternate mode of entry”:
“Mail a legibly handwritten, self-addressed, stamped envelope with sufficient postage and return address, including first and last name … to:
2012 MONOPOLY Game at McDonald’s Game Piece Request
P.O. Box 49121
Strongsville, OH 44149-0121″
For your efforts, you will receive 2 game pieces (aka 4 game stamps). Vermont has a special mention here that states,
“Residents of Vermont (VT) that are postmarked in VT may omit return postage”.
VT gets the cheapest pieces at the price of a single postage stamp as opposed to the 2 stamps cost to the rest of us. It is joked a lot that monopoly is a game of losing friends over not striking deals with others. I turn my back on Vermont.
Now here comes the part where if you don’t pay close attention, no stamps for you! First off, each request has to be in a separate outer envelope. So if you want 8 total game stamps so that you may win a McFlurry, you need to send 2 requests (2 outer envelopes containing 1 self-addressed envelope per envelope .. say that 5 times fast). But here is where things get a bit more picky:
“Stamps that are sent in business reply envelope that utilize address labels or stickers (for any address), that are photocopied, hand stamped, computer generated or otherwise mechanically or digitally produced or reproduced, that are not mailed in a separate outer stamped mailing envelopes, or that otherwise fail to comply with these Official Rules will NOT be honored, acknowledged or returned, and the persons submitting such requests will forfeit any corresponding postage and unused envelopes.”
Next, I will be posting the fine print and Official Rules guide to prizes and redemption.
