The multi-platinum pop rock group Matchbox Twenty formerly known as Matchbox 20, performed on NBC’s Today Show monday morning, for a special Labor Day concert.
Front man/pianist Rob Thomas, guitarist/drummer Paul Doucette, lead guitarist Kyle Cook and bassist Brian Yale all performed some of their past hits, as well as new cuts from their newly released album ‘North.’
The award winning group performed for a huge crowd of dedicated fans who stood on line for hours to catch a glimpse of the Grammy award winning singer/song writer Rob Thomas along with his super group Matchbox Twenty band mates at NBC’s Toyota concert series in Rockefeller Center.
This is the Orlando, Florida native’s first collaboration of new music in over ten years.
Thomas explained to Today Show’s co-host Natalie Morales the reason for the delay in the new release.
“We were all doing our own thing, you know with outside solo projects” in regards to the 10 year hiatus for the band he stated: “It was always the plan to do other projects”, noting that: “we were always in constant communication with each other, so it didn’t seem like a big break to us.”
The billboard chart toppers have been a constant hit making machine since their debut album ‘Yourself or Someone like You’ entered the charts. therefore, making this album a success is very important to the band and its record label.
The band kicked off their morning concert with their mega classic hits ‘3am’ and ‘How Far We’ve Come’ from their classic 1996 hit album ‘Yourself or Someone Like You’ as well as their retrospective collection, ‘Exile on Mainstream, 2007’. The Rockefeller Center morning crowd went wild with excitement!
Rob Thomas crooned his way through the classic hits with ease as his band mates provided a musical backdrop to remember.
The band also performed new hits ‘Overjoyed’ and ‘She’s so mean’ from their highly anticipated new collaborated album ‘North’, the songs upbeat tempos kept the crowd of screaming fans jumping all morning!
The band also explained that the album title ‘North’ is all about direction; everyone is trying to find out where they are and where they are headed.
The band is scheduled to perform in support of their new release during several appearances on television and international concert dates, beginning on September 18th at the 02 Shepherds Bush Empire in London, England, UK.
it was announced that Rob Thomas will be joining team Cee-Lo Green on the Voice as a mentor during season 3 of the hit music show.
