Allegations of sexual relationships between teachers and students are happening more and more often. The latest teacher to be accused of having a sexual relationship with a student is Mary Gowans of Toronto Canada.
Gowans, 42 a married mother of two is currently on trial in the Ontario Superior Court for allegations that she had ‘sexual encounters’ with a former student. According to the prosecution, the sexual relationship began when the student was a 14 year-old. Gowans taught French at the Joseph Howe Sr. Public School in Toronto.
The allegations accuse Gowans of having intimate encounters with the boy including the claim that she exposed her breasts to him. The young man who is now 18 also alleges that he kissed and groped Gowans.
According to the victim, the relationship between them continued even after he graduated. He insists that he saw her several times a week and even babysat her two children.
There are many additional allegations that the former student is testifying to in court. He alleges that while he was in school he made a bet with her that he could outrun her in a 10k race. The bet was that if he won, she would show him her breasts. He stated that not only did he win but she kept her end of the deal and exposed herself to him while he was in her home.
Another specific claim he is making is that while he was in 10th grade, he supposedly “got on top of me [him] and started kissing me [him]. The young man told Justice John McMahon that, “She often told me never to tell anyone because of how much trouble she’d be in.”
When asked why he waited so long to report the relationship he responded that he finally became “overwhelmed with the situation”. He reportedly then told his mother and sister about the relationship.
Defense attorney, Peter Brauti maintains that there was no sexual relationship between the two except for the young man’s crush on his teacher. The victim did admit to “talking guy talk” about Gowans with his friends.
The defendant maintains her innocence against the allegations of sexual assault, sexual interference and sexual exploitation of the boy. According to Brauti, no sexual activity took place between Gowans and her former student. He insists that the only instance of sexual activity was when the young man made a sexual advance on his client.
Brauti contends that Gowans rebuffed the young man then immediately cut off all contact with him.
