Throughout the year, different months bring important causes to the public and awareness to current subjects. October is the month when people recognize the devastating effects of breast cancer. People in Louisville and across the nation raise money and hold walking and racing events to represent the fight for life. It is a month to celebrate survivors, encourage those who are fighting the disease and mourn the ones who are lost.
Its easy to think about the things you cannot do or the things you wish you could change. Donating money and walking for a fundraising event are some things to do. Another way you could show your support is by making crafts that you can display or sell for a fundraiser.
Make Pink ribbon wreaths made out of pink cloth, tulle or ribbon, embellished water bottles or pink pumpkins with the signature ribbon on them.
Make a wreath out of old bras
Bras can come in so many different colors and they can have lace, silk and other fabrics that could make a fun and interesting craft statement. Stuff some cotton in the cups, attach them to a gravevine or styrofoam wreath form. Use the colors of the bras to mix into an interesting arrangement and embellish your wreath with coordinating ribbons.
Pink Ribbon picture frames– acrylic frames with pink ribbons or stickers attached
Pink Ribbon fleece blankets-find pink fleece and design a blanket to show the cause
Pink ribbon bracelets and jewelry– use pink as your inspiration to create and decorate jewelry with beads, charms and elastic
Homemade T shirts with slogans like:
“Fight like a girl”
“Save the ta-tas”
“Big or small, lets save them all”
“Still fighting…still believing”
“Running for a cure…”
“Because we love them…”
“Celebrate more birthdays”
“Thumbs up for Lane Goodwin (Blue and Yellow)”
“I got squished.”
Mammograms are no fun. After you or a loved one has had their exam, make a t-shirt as a gift to put a smile on their face and remind them that their health, and peace of mind was worth it.
Set up an awareness stand in front of your house and let your talents inspire a crowd. Create pink drinks to serve at your fundraiser and promote your crafts. Bring your homemade t shirts and water bottles for your team to wear at a breast cancer awareness walk. Take the proceeds to the American Cancer Society or another authentic charity fundraising effort in your community. There is no right or wrong when a craft is made from the heart. Crafts can be your special way to tell someone’s story, represent a loved one or express your feelings. Crafts can heal, help and be a way for your to show your support against breast cancer. Happy October to everyone fighting the good fight.
