If you ever wanted to play a game that reminded you of “Machete” or “Planet Terror” or had the tendency to break the fourth wall then look no further than “Lollipop Chainsaw.” Even though this game has somewhat repetitive game play and it is not the most challenging game it still adds ups to very fun adventure from beginning to end. Also there is plenty is of zombies to kill so if you are into that sort of thing then you really should take a look at this game.
The story is pretty straight-forward as the town of San Romero has been invaded by zombies and it is your job as a zombie hunter to defeat them and to save your town from destruction. There is also the fact that your character is a scantily-clad cheerleader that just turned 18 and carries the still alive head of her bodiless boyfriend around on her belt. The story just gets more insane from that point on as you face more and more bizarre enemies and the main characters kind of know that they are in game and are parodies of the typical characters that you see in a horror setting.
The game has memorable characters and great music that really set the mood and setting for this game. Even though Juliet is a spot-on parody of a typical high school cheerleader the character that really steals the show is the decapitated head of Nick. Nick has some of the bets lines in the game and has to act like the straight man throughout this crazy adventure. The music is “Lollipop Chainsaw” is a throwback to the typical 1950s high school scene and the soundtrack captures the essence of the world that was ruled by Elvis.
The game play can get quite repetitive and there is not really that much sense of a challenge but the hacking of zombies and the crazy fight scenes make up for that. The game play is pretty monotonous as you move to arena and arena, fight enemies and then just move on. However this made up for as you are constantly gaining weapons to fight with and there are plenty of combos to unlock and use. Another downside is the boss fights. Even though the bosses are funny and ridiculous the actual battles are pretty much the cookie cutter model of action games. As there are three phases in each battle and they all follow the same formula: you figure out the boss’s pattern, find the weak point and then repeat. Despite this it was still a hunch of fun to go around and kill a horde of zombies in new and creative ways.
“Lollipop Chainsaw” is a game that blends self-parodying humor, a ridiculous storyline and zombie killing into a decent package but has some flaws that prevent it from becoming great. If you are looking for a game that will make you laugh or are looking for game that allows you to kill zombies then give this game try.
