Summoners, a new week is upon us, and with it a new band of free champions. Each week I will be reviewing the champions available, giving a few interesting statistics over them, and providing a few of my top picks.
The champions free this week are contained in the slideshow at the top of this page.
This week, there are two 450 IP champions, two 1350 IP champions, two 3150 IP champions, one 4800 IP champion, and three 6300 IP champions. That makes the total IP cost 33600, and the average 3360.
This week is a little low on the casters (only one actual mage that is generally not played as a support), but it has plenty of bruisers that are borderline tanks, and several actual tanks.
Next, I’ll pick out what I consider the best at several roles –
#1 Top Lane this week: Riven
Riven’s damage potential is huge, and with just a few items like Frozen Mallet or Maw of Malmortius, he can easily become a bruiser that is hard to kill. With a stun as well as two gap closers, and a shield, Riven is hard to trade with and even harder to catch up with.
#1 Mid Lane this week: Morgana
I’m tempted to say Talon, because if you can learn to play him well Talon’s AD mid strategy can seriously shut down an enemy team’s AD carry. But Morgana’s ultimate can change the tide of an entire game; catch four or five enemy champions in your ultimate, smash down Zhonya’s if they target you, and proceed to cackle while your team mops up their shattered dreams.
#1 AD Carry this week: Ashe
Depending on how you play, Ashe can be great or terrible. A well-fed Ashe, however, is difficult to escape from, and more importantly, she’s one of the simplest champs in league – with two offensive active abilities, one of which is her ult, Ashe’s builds concentrate almost solely on making her autoattacks as efficient and damaging as possible.
#1 Support this week: Blitzcrank
Lulu is rarely seen in the free champions week, but Blitz is still a solid choice, and it’s all because of his utility. Early game, his grab is capable of almost instantly taking down a champion, as long as your AD Carry or a turret is there to deal some damage while the other champion is vulnerable. Late game, he’s a tank that can be hard to take down if he builds properly, and can really mess up positioning of a team. Lulu is about true support – Blitz is just a little more offensive.
#1 Jungler this week: Olaf
There aren’t any incredibly strong junglers this week, so I’m going to go with a personal favorite. Olaf’s lifesteal and true damage make him deadly if you can get ahold of your enemy; unfortunately, his axe is his only CC, so be sure that your carries are ready or have their own CC ready to stop your gank target from running away.
Disagree with any of these? Looking forward to any champions? Leave a comment and tell us what you think!
