In the second episode, “Blue on Blue,” of the thrilling new ABC series “Last Resort” which aired Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 7:00 p.m., the USS Colorado fires disabled missiles at the USS Illinois as a warning. The Illinois turns away and the crew of the Colorado gets ready for the next assault
That next assault comes in the form of a plane flying overhead which they believe has just deployed a team of Special Forces soldiers to either take control of the submarine, the island or both.
Captain Chaplin (Andre Braugher) and XO Lt. Commander Sam Kendall ( Scott Speedman) decide to find a way to fend off the impeding attack and the XO turns to Sophie Girard, the French leader of the NATO communications facility for help finding a place where the crew could set up an ambush for the special ops team. She is reluctant to help but he reminds her that it was his ship that refused to fire on Pakistan and that now they are targets because of their actions. She agrees and takes him, along with his team to a location the special ops team will have to pass through to get to the sub. James King, (Daniel Lissing) the Navy seal, helps the team get ready in spite of not really caring.
The team takes up positions and waits. When the special ops team arrives, Sam is wrestling with his conscience over killing fellow Americans and heads out to talk to them. Meanwhile Captain Chaplin, listening over the radio is simultaneously talking to Washington D.C and learns the assault team isn’t American but Russian. He relays this to Sam and Sam trips a mine the Russian soldiers are standing on, knowing they can’t understand him and won’t listen to reason – they’ve been sent to capture an American submarine.
During the ensuing gun battle, Lt. Grace Shepard (Daisy Betts) and her part of the team are pinned down. She runs out to assault the Russians and is shot. King, who had been hiding nearby, shoots the Russian before he can kill Shepard. Five of the American team are killed and two Russians are taken prisoner.
Meanwhile, Stateside, Christine (Jessy Schram), San’s wife, is forced to call her husband and pitch the government’s offer of immunity in exchange for the ship and the captain. Before she hangs up, she screams to him not to take it and to remember she loves him. Threatening her with abetting, they show her a film of her husband being debriefed. She learns he was held prisoner and tortured, something he never told her about. They try to convince her he is no the man she knows him to be. At the end, Paul Willis, a friend of Sam’s and a lawyer, shows up to take Christine home.
Kylie Sinclair (Autumn Reeser) finds out the technology she has installed on board the USS Colorado works. Her friend warns her that the government will take it over, claiming eminent domain or The Patriot Act. Wanting to protect her company’s investment, she blackmails him into helping her find out who gave the order for the Colorado to fire on Pakistan. Later in the show, she receives a call and rushes to the hospital where her friend lies, brain dead – supposedly the result of an allergic reaction. His wife tells Kylie that his brain went 10 minutes without oxygen.
Sam tells Chaplain, as the show is ending that he knows him well and trusts him. The captain rewards his loyalty by passing a folded piece of paper to Sam – one we do not see the contents of.
What was on the scrap of paper? Who killed Kylie’s friend and why? What will become of the Russian prisoners? And most importantly, what’s next for the men and women of the USS Colorado? We will have to tune in next Thursday to learn more.
