What would Hip Hop be without soul music? Furthermore what would modern American culture be without soul music? These are the questions that provocative composer Miguel Atwood-Ferguson is asking. There is a growing narrative of music that is interwoven within the bonds of our past, present and future-Soul music is perhaps at the center of these connections.
On Sept. 9 2012 Atwood will be exploring the legacy of soul music in Los Angeles and beyond at the Mayan Theater. Atwood, who is known for ho groundbreaking composing in the Hip Hop community; has been at the helm of classical reinterpretations of Hip Hop production using a live orchestra or ensemble.
The goal of East Side Story at The Mayan with a lot of help from Miguel Atwood-Ferguson is to bridge generation gaps and celebrate the knowledge and awareness that… “Music does last forever….”
Featuring Mayer Hawthorne, Bilal, James Gadson and hosted by Abraham Beltran East Side Story will celebrate the music of Etta James, James Brown, Brenton Wood, The Chi-Lites, The Delfonics, The Temptations, Billy Stewart, Mary Wells, The Flamingos, Barbara Lewis, Smokey Robinson, and many more.
