Last year witnessed many changes in the Houston beer scene and one positive change was the number of festivals and tasting events held throughout the area. For many of these events, 2012 was their debut- the first time to test the waters and discover just how popular craft beer really is in the Houston area.
After attending several beer- related events in the past year, one thing is certain: Houstonians love great beer and love community involvement. One event that took place this past summer and was greatly successful on both a social and community level was the Katy Wild West Beer Fest. Sponsored by the Katy Rotary, the event was well- attended, raised a good deal of money for local charity, and ended on a positive note, with many guests asking about plans for next year and some possible changes they would like to see. The greatest issue I heard from people when I attended last years’ event was the oppressive heat, but other than that, guests seemed very satisfied with the craft beer selections, the food, and other festival aspects.
Mark Your Calendars:
The Katy Rotary has, as expected, planned for another (and possibly two) Katy Wild West Brew Fest in 2013. The plan is to hold the event once again at the Villagio Town Center but this time, the festival will take place a little earlier in the spring when extreme heat is less likely. The date has been set for Saturday, May 4, 2013 and, like last year, it will include beer from a wide selection of local and other craft breweries along with great food, a VIP tent, and music by the band Horizon.
As stated above, the Katy Wild West Beer Fest will be held earlier in the year in response to concerns about the warmer than usual temperatures. But there will likely be more changes than simply the date on the calendar. Rumor has it that the Katy Rotary has some other ideas in mind that should be fun and entertaining. The goal is to make the event more than just another beer festival. Organizers want to raise even more money for charity and they want to involve the breweries and crowd in creative ways.
May 4, 2013 is still several months away, but now that the official date has been released, there is no excuse not to reserve the date and attend the Katy Wild West Brew Fest in 2013. The first event in 2012 was a great success and there is no reason to expect that 2013 won’t be even better and more memorable.
