Kate Middleton joined the royal family and inevitably became one of the most sought after personalities in the news. Kate had 10 years with Prince William before they wed, so she probably had a good idea what being a royal entailed. It’s Kate’s family that probably didn’t understand the full scope of how their life would change until things started racking up after Kate and William had been married for a while. Just how life has changed for family members comes in loud and clear, as seen in a new story regarding Pippa from The Reporter Monday.
The royal family affiliation for the Middleton family seems to work much like the old adage about the cow that gives the milk and then kicks over the bucket. While they’ve been awarded fame, the price that comes along with that fame is hefty. The position that the Middleton family finds themselves in today leaves the family riding a fine line when it comes to how they live their lives. The examples below demonstrate that being in-laws with the royals is not as glamorous as one might think.
Pippa: When Kate walked down the aisle at Westminster Abbey last year, her family was thrust into the limelight as instant celebrities; this is especially true for Pippa. The younger sister of Kate wrote a party planning book and without Kate in her bloodline, chances are the book would not be a read seen by too many people. It was her attachment to the royal family that sparked the interest in her book.
Just as Pippa was getting ready to embark on a book tour in the U.S., the royals somehow put a stop to it, according to a report from Time on Saturday. It’s not known if Pippa was asked not to go by the royal family and agreed to the request, but she’s not going to America to plug her book anytime soon. This tour was canceled because she would be bombarded with questions of Kate’s photo scandal and sadly no matter how generically she’d respond to the questions coming from the media, it would spin into news about Kate’s photo scandal. This was something the royals want to avoid at all costs, the cost here being Pippa’s fame and financial gain from a tour across the pond.
Carol and Michael Middleton: Kate’s parents have had their fair share of scrutiny in the media. In an article from CNN last year, it discussed how the Middleton family business flourished after Kate’s engagement to Prince William. This also came with some problems for their Party Pieces Company. The Middleton’s have run a party planning business for years, yet today they have to be extremely mindful of not offering items that could be seen as cashing in on their new found royal fame Yet, their competitors in this business do not have the same problem. An article from CNBC, talks about the problems the Middleton’s encounter keeping their business away from all things royal, like during the Summer Olympics this year. They are under the microscope of the media. It is not an easy task for this family.
Michael Middleton got pro-active before Kate and William married by purchasing and registering web domains for Kate’s brother and sister, James and Pippa. This was to guard against others capitalizing on his children’s names, according to Celeb Dirty Laundry. He missed out on Kate’s name, as she was already surfacing in the media as William’s fiancée and websites carrying her name or reference to Kate were saturated online. There’s speculation today that Kate’s father recently purchased one of the websites set-up just to display Kate’s topless and bottomless pictures and then shut it down. According to Celeb Dirty Laundry, “all fingers do point to Michael Middleton.”
Watching this photo scandal bloom must have hurt Kate’s father and mother, as they are aware of how mortified their daughter was over this. This is another example of how their lives have changed since their oldest daughter became a royal. Kate is a sitting duck for the media and they can paint her anyway they see fit, as seen with the “Waity Katy” stories years ago.
Luckily, today Kate is much loved by the public and media as well, making the negative news articles almost non-existent today. This latest photo scandal did see its fair share of finger pointing at Kate for taking her bathing suit off in an outside area. This is something that must really hurt Kate’s parents, as she’ll always be their little girl, even when she’s the queen one day.
Carol and Michael Middleton also saw a potential bout of negative news brewing when they did something as generic as apply for a building permit for their home, according to Mail Online. While the town’s zoning board passed their plans, the uproar it caused with the neighbors wasn’t worth the Middleton’s pursuing this. Because of who they are, a zoning ruling for a town in a little corner of the world made headline news around the globe. They needed to take into consideration the cause of embarrassment this might cause the royals if they went ahead with it.
James Middleton: Kate’s only brother has a specialty cake business, called Nice Cakes, which sends comical and other specialty type confections around the world. When he added a line of adult humor to his cake offerings on his website, this made headline news, according to The Sun. Kate’s name once again became headline news because her brother’s cakes that were risqué and in line with adult entertainment. This could have been another embarrassing situation for Kate, but she seems to have taken the stand that her family has a right to do business like they have been for years.
It seems as if Kate’s fate has also turned into the Middleton family’ fate and the family seem to be handling this fairly well. While it’s sad that Pippa’s U.S. book tour was canceled, you have to remember that she wouldn’t be in demand for the interviews and appearances if she was just a commoner. It is Kate Middleton’s sister that they want, not Pippa the author. Proof of this came when the U.S. venues have declined promoting the book without a visit from Pippa, according to Time.
