Wednesday, Sept. 12
Queen of Paws Boutique & Spa (4515 W. 90th St., Prairie Village) hosts a shopping event at 6 p.m.; it’s benefiting Unleashed Pet Rescue and Adoption.
Thursday, Sept. 13
Hamburger Mary’s (101 Southwest Blvd., KCMO) hosts charity bingo for Chain of Hope from 8 to 10 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 14 through Sunday, Sept. 16
PetSmart Charities is having a three-day adoption event at all PetSmart stores. Contact your local PetSmart to find out what rescue organizations are participating.
Saturday, Sept. 15
Head out to English Landing Park in Parkville for the Friends of Parkville Animal Shelter Paws in the Park Dog Walk Festival. It’s from 9 a.m. to noon. Enjoy a dog walk along the river, shop from vendors, see demonstrations and participate in contests and raffles. The Kansas City Disc Dogs will show off high-flying feats, and Pete and Mac’s will host AKC Canine Good Citizen testing. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Plus, if you collect pledges for the walk, you could win an iPad or an iPod. Learn more and register for Paws in the Park online at www.pawsinpark.com.
Animals Best Friends will have a garage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the National Guard Armory in Independence (2323 S. Crysler Ave.). Volunteers will take donations from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Animals Best Friends (2302 S. Crysler Ave., Independence). No clothing or shoes will be accepted.
The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City Golf Classic will be at Swope Memorial Golf Course (6900 Swope Memorial Drive, KCMO). Lunch and registration are at 11 a.m., with the start at 1 p.m. An awards dinner will end the day. Read more about this HSGKC fundraiser.
Pooches in the Pool is from noon to 3 p.m. at Blue Springs Centennial Pool-Plex (2401 N.W. Ashton Drive, Blue Springs). Only the first 100 dogs to arrive will be allowed to participate. The fee is $6 per dog. Proceeds benefit the off-leash dog park in Blue Springs. To register in advance or for more information, call 816-228-0137.
Butt Scootin’ Boogie is a benefit for Kansas City Pet Project, the operator of the KCMO animal shelter. It will be at The Back Yard at the Beaumont Club (4050 Pennsylvania, KCMO) from 3 to 10 p.m. Featured acts include Ryan Beaver and Mark McKinney. Admission is $5; kids ages 3 and under are free. Dogs are also welcome to attend. Vendors will be on site.
The Kansas City Roller Warriors are donating a portion of ticket proceeds this season to the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City. Winnwood Skate Center will match the donations. HSGKC’s own Christy Ubelake (also known as “Jamalamadingdong”) is a Warriors member. The bout starts at 7 p.m. at Municipal Auditorium (301 W. 13th St., KCMO). Adult tickets are $13 in advance or $16 at the door; child tickets are $6 in advance or $8 at the door. You can purchase tickets online. Bring an item off the HSGKC wish list in exchange for a gift.
Saturday, Sept. 15 through Sunday, Sept. 16
The Greater Kansas City Dog Training Club (9911 E. 63rd St., Raytown) is having a pair of “show ‘n’ go” events this weekend. Obedience dogs compete on Saturday at the following times: Utility, 8 a.m.; Open, 10:30 a.m.; and Novice and Beginner Novice classes at noon. Times for all but the Utility class are approximate. AKC Rally dogs in the Excellent, Advanced and Novice classes compete on Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. Entry fees are $6 for GKCDTC members and $7 for non-members. Pre-registration for Saturday and/or Sunday is strongly encouraged.
Activities during the Kansas City Renaissance Festival’s Pet Festival Weekend include contests, shopping at vendor booths and meeting adoptable animals. You must pay $10 per pet before entering the festival grounds (633 N. 130th St., Bonner Springs). Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., rain or shine.
Sunday, Sept. 16
Walk a mile—or even two—in Leavenworth’s VA Park and help raise money for Waggin’ Tails Dog Park (2900 Home Place, Leavenworth). The Hound Hike is from 1 to 4 p.m., rain or shine. Raffles, an agility fun run and vendors are also part of the event. You can fill out this registration form or register online.
Bring your dog for Ciao Bow Wow at SPIN! Neapolitan Pizza in KCMO (4950 Main St.) or Olathe (14230 W. 119th St.). Tickets are $25 per dog, with proceeds going to Wayside Waifs. Pet owners order off the regular menu for the regular prices. Your dog will get a special pizza dinner and dessert from Three Dog Bakery. Seatings are from 3 to 8 p.m. Reservations are required; make yours by calling 816-561-SPIN (7746) for the KCMO location or 913-764-SPIN (7746) for the Olathe location. If the Ciao Bow Wow events on this date are sold out, the final date is Sept. 23 at the Overland Park and Lee’s Summit locations.
Celebrity chef Celina Tio, who has been featured on Food Network’s “The Next Iron Chef” and Bravo’s “Top Chef Masters,” is also hosting a dinner fundraiser for Wayside Waifs. Pooches on the Patio will be at Tio’s Brookside restaurant, Julian (6227 Brookside Plaza, KCMO). Seatings are at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $60 a person, with $25 from each ticket sold going to Wayside Waifs. Only one dog per couple is allowed to attend. Brookside Barkery & Bath will provide a special dinner for your pooch, while you enjoy a four-course meal and a chef-selected bottle of wine. If you don’t want to bring your dog, you can take home a “doggie bag” for your pooch. Make your reservation by contacting Brookside Barkery & Bath at 816-333-2275.
