Once again, workaholic Johnny Depp takes on yet another project added to his always full plate. This time, Depp has just signed on for the lead role in Wally Pfister’s debut at directing (Inception‘s cinematographer and Christopher Nolan’s right-hand man, who also shot The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises). The film is called Transcendence and plot is pretty tight lipped, a sort of 2001: A Space Oddessy meets Inception. All we know is that Johnny’s character is a husband who is sucked into an evil computer that he created, reports from Hollywood Reporter say.
Johnny will receive quite the pirate’s booty for this role…supposedly $20 million against 15 percent of the gross, sources say.
Speaking of more booty for Johnny, have you seen the official trailer for Lone Ranger yet? If not, video is here in this article.
Matt Goldberg from Collider.com writes through source Hollywood Reporter :
“The story centers on a man who creates a computer that develops a malevolent awareness. Depp will play a husband who gets sucked into the computer.” For some reason The Hollywood Reporter did not include TRON as a comparative film. Depp’s participation is contingent on changes Pfister is willing to make to Jack Paglen‘s script.
Rumors of Pfister in talks with Prometheus’ Noomi Rapace for Johnny’s wife and female lead have been flying, but who knows who it will be. Transcendence supposedly has three main male leads, and one is already taken by Johnny, and according the Los Angeles Times, Christian Bale may be playing one of them, with the other still up for grabs. Johnny and Christian worked together in Public Enemies, but didn’t have much screen time together. Even though Pfister has met with Noomi Rapace to play the female lead, no one knows yet for sure if she will be the female lead. He’s also met with James McAvoy and Tobey Maguire who may be up for the roles, and Christoph Waltz is being eyed for a supporting role.
And just like The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises another Nolan-Pfister-Bale collabo could be a winner. LA Times reported that filming will be in Los Angeles.
Jack Paglen is writing the screenplay which isn’t yet finished. And executive producers Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are joined by producers Kate Cohen, Broderick Johnson, Andrew A. Kosove, Annie Marter, and Marisa Polvino. Companies heading up production are: Alcon Entertainment and Straight Up Films which begins shooting next year, and Warner Bros. distributing the film.
Kosove and Johnson state,
“Johnny Depp is one of the most charismatic, talented actors imaginable and we are delighted he is with us on this project.”
And Pfister said,
“I’m thrilled, and feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Johnny. He is a creative and intelligent artist whom I feel will bring great depth to the character and the overall narrative.”
