Here is my second interview with Houston cosplayer SuWan. After winning awards at cosplay contests in various conventions, she has been cast in the reality show “Uncharted 3: Race for the Ring”, participated in the Sony/Naughty Dog “Make.Believe” contest, and worked with Capcom at their booth at San Diego Comic Con, the largest convention of its kind. I asked about her experience working at the convention, as well as tips for people who may be looking to attend the convention next year.
Examiner: Was this your first time at SDCC?
SuWan: Yes, this was my first time at SDCC!
Examiner: Have you worked with Capcom before?
SuWan: No, not at all. I entered a few contests on Capcom Unity, but that’s about it haha!
Examiner: What exactly did they have you do?
SuWan: Well, I think it was a mutual agreeing of me dressing as Ada Wong from RE6 and standing at their awesome setup that made me constantly crave Chinese food. They pretty much just wanted to bring a more intimate experience of what the consumers have in store, like a mascot of sorts I suppose. Except not really a mascot, but a cosplayer instead, haha!
Examiner: What was your favorite part of the job?
SuWan: Definitely meeting everyone! I love meeting people and just meeting so many eager fans and curious gamers! It was great! Oh and of course hanging out with the Capcom staff!
Examiner: Did you get to meet any celebrities?
SuWan: I did actually! I met Nathan Fillion, which was amazing! I also got to meet Reuben Langdon, which was a dream of mine for MANY many years. Just seeing him… Ah! I remember it like it was yesterday or maybe even 5 seconds ago. But, I saw him and my heart just stops and its like that heavenly beam reigning down from the fluorescent lights of the convention center and all I could think is, “My dreams have come true!” I totally got a photo with him! For me being a gamer, I really wanna try mo-cap one day. But, I was very fortunate to have seen and met so many stars! I even met the voice crew from RE6. Oh, and Ono san, LOL! That name should explain the craziness of that brilliant man.
Examiner: Who were you most excited to meet?
SuWan: All in all, I don’t think I can just choose one person. I got to meet new people, fulfilled some dreams, and I got to meet friends I don’t get to see and spend time with often. I honestly couldn’t choose just one!
Examiner: Did you get to check out the convention when you weren’t working?
SuWan: Of course! I mean if anything I think Capcom was worried I wouldn’t walk away and explore, but I had so much fun being surrounded by fans and fellow gamers! Not to mention I was RIGHT beside the Warner Brothers, and Assassins’s Creed booths, LOL! But, yes I did explore and my oh my, it is amazingly filled with awesome nerdism!
Examiner: What was the most awesome exhibit, or thing you saw at SDCC?
SuWan: There were very many amazing exhibits at SDCC, you can tell this is one of very few, if not the ONLY, convention that companies really strive to impress and give the attendees and experience of what they have to offer.
Examiner: Was there anything else there that blew your mind?
SuWan: I think the Assassin’s Creed fans inside the movie booth screaming “AMURICA” waving around their inflated tomahawks and grunting LOL! It was so amazingly awesome.
Examiner: How many cosplay outfits did you pack?
SuWan: I brought with me 3 costumes! All 3 being Resident Evilly filled with awesome.
Examiner: Which one seemed to be the most popular?
SuWan: S.T.A.R.S. Jill Valentine and R.E. 6 Ada.
Examiner: How does SDCC compare to anime cons or other cons that you have been to?
SuWan: Oh wow, well it is HUGE! I don’t think anything could ever top how big it is and how much there is to do. Let’s just say its also intimate in the way of no space to move. Conventions I attend locally are intimate in the way of having friends, and time, also space to see people and friends.
Examiner: Will you be doing future promotional work with Capcom?
SuWan: I really do not know LOL! I hope so! But, if anything, I loved the memories I have made and friendships gained! I would love to work with them since everyone is so kind, and very cool and awesome to talk to, and unique in their own admirable way. So, hopefully in the future I will get to spend time with all of them again. If not for work, then at least as friends.
Examiner: What tips do you have for people going to SDCC for the first time?
SuWan: PLAN YOUR DAY! Plan your night too! Bring a sleeping bag, because people like to camp out, LOL! If you are a cosplayer, bring something you know can get a bit shoved and pushed around in. Also bring money, and lots of it! So much amazing stuff! SDCC is definitely an experience. Not only inside the convention center, but down the entire street! That’s right, I said the entire street! That’s how huge it is. So that being said, you’ll need to wear Dr. Scholls.
