Your resume is polished, and so are your shoes. You have your power suit on, and a smile on your face. You greet the interviewer with your most pleasant and outgoing handshake.
But, there are topics which may fog your chance of a successful interview outcome. Don’t forfeit the job opportunity by asking any of the following questions.
Your prospective employer likes to think that you’ve done your homework before arriving in his or her office, so do not ask “What does your company do?” You might find that humorous, but it’s definitely a decision-buster on behalf of Human Resources. It’s also up to you to find out in advance if the job is perm, or temp, or temp-to-perm; as well as some of the details about job duties. After all, you applied, so you must have reasons to think you’re qualified.
Just as your potential employer is not allowed to ask you questions relating to your personal life, no matter how much they might like such information, likewise you are not to ask delicate questions about the company’s employee demographics. So don’t question the interviewer as to his or her marital status, or what religious holidays he or she observes, or whether the company employs senior citizens or raw college recruits. The Internet provides a vast background source of information about many businesses: do your advance work there.
And finally, keep in mind that questions such as “How much will I be paid?”, and “What policy does your company have about showing up late for work?” are so off-putting that you might as well walk out of the interview office right after asking them. So don’t ask! The interviewer is not taking time to talk to you in order to answer such questions as “Is there a microwave in the break room?”
Keep your questions serious, job-centered, and non-personal. Comment as though you really are interested in the workings of your potential employer, but don’t act in such a casual manner that you think you have the job halfway through the interview. Refine your own interview questions.

- Thank you for the interview. What is my next step in the process?
