Showing off abs that suggest Wolverine’s claws might not be the only thing made of admantium, Hugh Jackman posed shirtless in the first official image from “The Wolverine,” which 20th Century Fox released Sept. 26.
In the photo, Jackman bares his chest if not his teeth. Jackman looks lean but strong, from his six-pack abs to his well-veined arms. He appears more than capable of living up to the character’s tough-guy reputation.
“The Wolverine” is the sequel to 2010’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” The movie is based on the 1982 Chris Claremont and Frank Miller limited comic series, with a script written by Christopher McQuarrie and Mark Bomback.
Jackman described Wolverine’s look to Empire Magazine while filming “X-Men Origins,” saying:
“I had this image in my head of De Niro in that remake of ‘Cape Fear.’ You were terrified of that character from the moment he took his shirt off and you saw all the tats; you know he was this coiled spring that would rip your head off, no matter how nonchalant he acted. That’s who Wolverine is. I always thought of him as being lean, animalistic, not necessarily pretty. He has all this berserkery, and he’s terrifying when he loses all reason in blind rage.”
It also might be said that Jackman’s physique lives up to the expectations set for the actor by the movie’s original director Darren Aronofsky, who wanted see a stronger Wolvie.
Aronofsy has since left the production, with James Mangold (“I Walk the Line”) now behind the camera, but his influence on the character’s look seems clear and should please comic-book fans.
Of course, this isn’t the only photo from “The Wolverine.” Set photos from the movie have been posted all over the internet during the movie’s production, including “The Wolverine” set photos from Australia. The film is currently filming in Japan, where it is set.
Fox’s official synopsis for “The Wolverine,” from ComingSoon.net:
“‘Wolverine’ finds Logan (Jackman), the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw, as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.”
Sharing the screen with Jackman in “The Wolverine” is Will Yun Lee as the Silver Samurai. Other members of the cast include Svetlana Khodchenkova Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto and Brian Tee. The film is slated for theatrical release July 26, 2013.
