Howard Stern will joke around about a lot of topics, but domestic violence on his staff isn’t one of them.
Things got awkward on Wednesday’s Howard Stern Show when producer Gary “Baba Booey” Dell’Abate played a clip of a recent interview with Wrap-Up Show technical producer “Teddy” on the “Back Office Radio” show. In the interview, Teddy jokes about his history of physical fights with his new wife “Poppy”. See a video clip of the discussion here
Teddy recounted a fight between him and his wife at a wedding, which resulted in a broken ankle for her and a nearly gouged out eye for him.
“We got in a bad fight at a wedding. I was bleeding. My buddy’s like–the quote was, he called my friend: ‘You gotta come help. Teddy and Poppy are fighting. There’s blood’. She hit me with her purse and her f***ing high heels were in her purse and the heel point gouged a hole in my face and I was bleeding all over the place. And to get her off me—I picked her up and, I guess—shotputted her across the f***ing room. I mean, whatever. The next day we were crying and laughing and I had to carry her down out of the hotel room.”
Teddy said as best as he could remember, the fight ensued after Poppy dropped a wine glass in the middle of the dance floor.
“Isn’t that wrong?” said Stern Wednesday after hearing the clip.
“Yes. All of it is wrong,” said co-host Robin Quivers.
“They seem to both be into it,” said Dell’Abate. “She hit him and gouged his eye out and he threw her and they laughed about it.”
“Are we sure this broad’s still alive?” asked Stern.
“Yeah, they’re out a lot,” said Dell’Abate.
“It’s something that they both dig? They like to get physical and fight? Or should we rescue her?” asked Stern.
“She’s not complaining. She married him,” said Dell’Abate.
“Well, she’s not complaining? Maybe there’s a problem there,” said Stern.
“Yeah, most battered women don’t complain until they’re really bad,” said Quivers.
“That’s very disturbing to me personally,” said Stern.
“I have flat out seen them throw punches at each other?” said Jason Kaplan, who interviewed Teddy.
“Wow. They do it in public?” said Stern.
“I think they only do it in public. It’s like, their thing.” said Kaplan.
“Is she enjoying it?” asked Stern.
“I guess so. I mean, I’ve never felt like I had to call the police,” said Kaplan.
“Is it something we intervene [on]?” asked Stern.
“They both like to drink,” said Kaplan. “And then they get to a certain point and if they get angry at each other it gets physical.”
“That doesn’t sound right to me,” said Stern.
“It sounds all bad to me,” agreed Quivers.
“Gary,” said Stern without humor. “I want you to get her in a safe space and talk to her. Alone”
“Teddy is one of those guys that thinks that drinking and losing control is something that happens twice a year. It just happens,” explained Dell’Abate.
“Her heels were in her purse and she hit him with her purse and then the heel went through his eye? Right under his eye? That ain’t healthy,” said Stern.
“Not at all,” said Quivers. “I don’t know why you marry somebody when you’re doing that…That doesn’t seem like the thing you do when that’s going on—say ‘I do.’”
“That’s crazy,” said Stern.
“Artie used to talk about that. They used to beat each other up in the back of his limo,” said Kaplan.
Teddy is perhaps best known to Howard Stern Show fans as Artie Lange’s former assistant, and the target of Lange’s rage during the infamous 2008 in studio “Teddy Fight”.
“I’m a man that believes that if I see something like that going down, I step in,” said Stern.
“I agree,” said Dell’Abate.
“One time in my life,” said Stern. “I can’t tell you who it was, I was with a couple and the guy got physical with his wife—this guy was twice my f***ing size. He could have decked me. I f***ing took him and rammed him into a wall. I said: ‘You do that in front of me I’m going to fight you.’ I said: ‘You’d probably kick my ass because you’re the size of a whale, but I’ll f***ing kill you…I’m a chivalrous motherf***er.”
Later in Wednesday’s show, Teddy came into the studio to clear the air.
“The one thing that I want to have taken away from this is that we’re not in any kind of crazy abusive relationship,” said Teddy. “There was one epic fight, like, years ago and I was just being honest for the radio…We never hit each other in front of Artie. It was just bickering—just drunk bickering. We’ve probably gotten into like two physical things…That was one time, I just kind of like pushed her off of me, and she fell–it was terrible. Believe me. I cried about it the next day.”
Stern was unsympathetic, saying:
“You gotta go to anger management.”
Robin Quivers suggested Teddy attend Alcoholics Anoymous, and Stern agreed, saying:
“If your behavior changes that radically when you drink–“
“It was just a freak thing at a wedding, and it was a really bad, bad night for both of us.”
“You gotta calm down. I feel like I’ve got to do an intervention.”
Jason Kaplan then piped in that Teddy and Poppy physically fight so often the have a name for it. They call it “Punchy Punch”.
“Punchy Punch is a game that everybody plays,” explained the 33-year-old Teddy.
“Dude, you’ve got a f***ing problem,” said Stern.
“It’s not as bad as it sounds,” said Teddy.
Stern advised Teddy to “knock off the physical stuff” and lay off the “Punchy Punch”.
“Believe me,” said Teddy. “I’m not an abusive dude.”
