When she was 12, Deidre Hughey was molested by an adult male acquaintance who threatened to kill her if she told anyone. For a long time she stayed silent but eventually confided in her mother, who trivialized her experience. That started the young girl on a long downward spiral.
By the time she was sixteen, Hughey was suicidal and had herself committed to a psychiatric institution. After that experience, she spent about eight years abusing street drugs and alcohol.
During her 20’s, she quit therapy. “I just decided I wanted to live life,” Hughey said. So she began to read every self-help book she could find.
Today, she helps people to change their own lives for the better and brands herself as a Reset Your Life Mastery Speaker.
“The biggest reason I see for people wanting to reset their lives is they reach a point where they say, ‘Is this all there is?'”
Hughey has helped many people with her Reset strategy for life change by teaching them to reframe their ideas about life. “I help them to look forward in their lives, rather than to live in the past or the present,” Hughey said. “As long as we focus on the past or the present, this is where we stay. It is hard to focus on goals. Now is powerful if we focus on it. The past can evoke so many emotions, especially if we had traumas. If we focus on the future, it allows us to think about possibilities again.”
In order to help people reset their lives, Hughey offers these Reset elements:
Your Vision Reset – one of the first things to do is to really just dream again. Make a list of all the dreams you would like to have come true, from the smallest to the grandest. “When you can’t think of anything else, write three more,” Hughey said. “There’s always something more.”
Reset Your Alert – become much more aware of the lies we tell ourselves. One of them is the Perfection Lie: “I have to be perfect at what I do before I can feel good about myself.” Another is the myth that “I work better under pressure.” This is a lie multi-taskers frequently tell themselves, according to Hughey.
Your Reset Rituals – “Form some daily rituals that help you to build your story,” Hughey said. “We need to be aware of our thoughts, but we need to replace them with something. One way to do this is to listen to positive radio shows and audio programs, and to read self-help books. Also, write affirmations daily and read them to yourself. “This is so powerful because we tell ourselves so many negative things each day,” Hughey said.
