When you are tired of working for others and actually want to find the real clients that will pay you the real money, you can start looking for businesses that need freelance writers. In my last article I wrote about Why Businesses Need Freelance Writers. However, you will need to do a few things to find those businesses and start making the big bucks for your writing.
Cold emailing is something you can do to find businesses that need you to write content for them. Whether they need someone to write for their website or write their brochures or fliers, those businesses that are serious about their company and want to get the word out about their business will pay what you want. One thing you can do to find these businesses is to check out websites in your niche. If you look at the content that is written and say to yourself, “I can do better” then you should try to get the job. You can find their contact us page or find an email address and contact them. Let them know who you are, what you do and what you can do for them. You might be surprised at the response you will get.
No one wants to try this method but it just might work. You can go through the phone book and find businesses that you would like to write for or go to their website and find a phone number and call them. Explain who you are and what you do and tell them what you can do to bring in more business for them. They might hang up on you but you might be surprised that they might agree with you and offer to hire you.
Speak to Potential Clients in Person
Another good approach is to go to the business you have found that might do better with your writing expertise. You can walk right in and ask to speak to a manager or supervisor and do the same thing here that you did with the cold emailing and cold calling. Take some clips with you or your business card with your writer’s website and portfolio on it. Show them how good you are and what you can do for them. This could be a great way to attract new clients and they might also refer you to other businesses they know.
Ask for Referrals
Asking for referrals from friends, family and even other clients is a good way to get new work. It might be hard to ask other clients because you don’t want them to think that your new work will steal you away from them but this is a good way to get more work. Just tell your current client that you are a freelance writer and freelance writers need all the work they can get. Explain to them that you will still have time to work for them. Ask them to spread the word to their co-workers and friends about you. Sometimes, if you are really good, they might refer you anyway.
Doing any or all of these methods will help you find the clients that actually want to pay what you are worth. It might take a while to find the clients you want but it will be worth it when you do.
