Sunday night October 28, 2012 was a night of great television capped off by this new amazing new episode of “Homeland” (season 2, episode 5). As it gets underway the first thing we see is Brody (Damian Lewis) shackled to a chair tapping his feet nervously. He is a prisoner once again.
In the next room Estes (David Harewood) shows up and he is pissed off. Peter (Rupert Friend) tells him that Carrie blew her cover so they had to move on Brody. They agree that that they likely only have about 24 hours before Abu Nazir (Navid Negahban) will realize he has been captured and scrap whatever mission they are on. Peter and Estes want Carrie (Claire Danes) removed from the case but Saul (Mandy Patinkin) goes to bat for her.
Peter is first up to try interrogating Brody. He asks him a few questions including the identity of Isa. Brody stonewalls him and tells him lies until finally Peter opens up the laptop that he has sitting on the table and tells Brody to watch the video. He then shows him his goodbye video that Carrie recovered in Beirut. Peter leaves him alone to watch the entire video.
In the morning Jessica (Morena Baccarin) is driving Dana (Morgan Saylor) and Chris (Jackson Pace) to school. They want to know why dad is staying at a hotel. She tries to explain that they are trying to work things out. Chris seems to take it much harder than Dana who already knew there was trouble in paradise. At school she meets up with Finn (Tomothee Chalamet) and tells him that she broke up with Zander. He offers to take her to a movie that night. When Jessica gets home she calls Brody’s office again trying to get a hold him.
Estes finds Brody’s aid Greg and tells him that Brody is working on a top secret project with the CIA and he will be gone for a few days. They set up a cover that Brody is very sick and in bed in his hotel.
Brody now looks exhausted as he sits with his head lying on the table staring at the picture of himself on the computer screen. Peter comes back in and starts questioning him again. This time he admits that he wanted to kill the Vice President to avenge Isa’s death, but he says he wasn’t wearing a vest and that he doesn’t know what Abu Nazir is planning. Peter loses it. He flips open a switchblade and stabs it though Brody’s hand. Everyone rushes into the room and pulls Peter off. They get the knife out of Brody’s hand and bandage him up. Carrie then sits down. It is her turn to talk to him.
Jessica shows up at the hotel and goes to Brody’s room. When he isn’t there she calls Greg and wants to know where he is. Greg stalls her then calls Estes and tells him that the wife knows he is missing. Saul asks Peter if the knife thing was an act. Peter is only partially believable when he says he is just being the bad cop to Carrie’s good cop.
Carrie now sits across from Brody in the interrogation room. She pours it on. She seems a little unhinged, but she tells him that she loved him and that he broke her heart, cost her her job and even had her thinking of killing herself. She takes the handcuffs off him, gets him water and shuts the cameras off (but leaves the hidden microphones on) and gives a world class performance. I won’t try to recount everything that is said, but let’s just say it is about ten of the best minutes of television I have seen in a long time. The scene unfolds like a crack in a dam slowly getting larger with Carrie digging at Brody, testing him, confiding in him, pleading with him and even telling him that she wants him to leave his wife and kids and be with her. She breaks him down little by little and leads him to exactly where she wants him to be. She empathizes with the mental state he is in and the horror that he went through. She even tells him about some of the horrors she has endured. She can understand why he wants to hurt the Vice President and others. She explains to him that Nazir spent five years breaking him down then rebuilt him as he wanted him. It isn’t his fault. He is human and now is the time to stop all the lies. Nazir doesn’t love him, he is just using him.
Brody looks like has been run through the ringer. Carrie has tears rolling down her cheeks then she reaches across the table, takes his hand and asks him for some names. He can’t hold anymore. The dam gives in and Brody confesses everything.
Saul comes in and tells Brody he needs to call his wife and reassure her that everything is fine. He does as they ask and tells her that he will be home later that night. They try to help Brody out of the chair, but he is so exhausted he just collapses to the floor.
Shortly after the call Jessica and Dana are sitting on the front pouch as Dana waits for Finn to pick her up. As they talk Dana says to her mom that Dad is different. What happened to him changed him.
Carrie wakes Brody up and tells him that she needs to go over his options. He has two choices. He can face a trial which will likely disgrace him, his family, the Marine Corp and the country and he will either spend the rest of his life in jail or get sentenced to death, or he can work for them. He goes back out in the world and acts like nothing is different, but he works for them and helps them bring Nazir down. In exchange for this they will drop any and all charges.
Dana and Finn are driving along on their way to the movies. They are stopped at a stop light with Secret Service in the SUV behind them when Dana says they should do something fun. Finn punches the gas and speeds through the red light. The Secret Service is right behind them. They have a high speed chase with the Secret Service through streets and alleyways then drive under a low hanging beam and lose the agents. As they speed around a corner Finn hits someone and they fly up over his car. Dana begs him to stop and help, but he says he can’t. He is the Vice President’s son. Something like this could destroy his life.
As Carrie drives Brody home she tells him that he needs to contact the journalist/terrorist Roya (Zuleikha Robinson) and tell her that he is back together with Carrie. They will have all of their meets at her place. If people think he is seeing her they won’t question it. Brody is worried Nazir will go after his family and she assures him that they will keep them safe.
When Brody gets home he tells Jessica that he was on a bender and that is how he got hurt. He tells her he is sorry and wants to come home. She says he can come home, but only if he tells her the truth. No bender bullshit. He tells her the partial truth by explaining that he is working for the CIA on matters of national security, but he can’t tell her any more right now. Just then Dana walks in and looks pale. Jessica asks her what is wrong and she says nothing. They drop it as Dana heads to bed and Chris comes out to hug his dad.
Carrie goes home, pours herself a glass of wine then sits down on her couch and is left alone with only her thoughts.
Season 2, episode 5 of “Homeland” was 60 minutes of tense perfection. If nothing else, the ten minutes of Carrie interrogating Brody proves why this is simply one of the best shows on TV and is worth all the hype.
