Chilean born Maria Jose Saez Garceau (Cote) is a practicing herbalist in the western suburbs. Through her home based business, Our Healing Roots, she offers an expanding line of organic, sustainable, fair trade products ranging from tinctures and teas to lip balms and lotions. She has been studying North and South American herbalism for seven years independently and under the tutelage of master herbalists such as Michel Tierra and Rosalee de la Foret. She is currently enrolled in her second year with the East West School of Planetary Herbology and will earn her certification as a professional herbalist with a focus on Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda. Garceau’s experinece extends beyond herbs and remedies into areas such as reiki, crystal quatrz singing bowl meditations, and the mind-body connection. She is a Reiki master and a reflexologist.
I first met Garceau three years ago via a west suburban holistic homeschooling group. I knew as soon as I read her bio that I would be contacting her for help with my daughter’s health. Our eldest was struggling with chronic, recurring strep infections that could not be resolved with any amount or combination of antibiotics. Immediately, Cote showed her prowess and identified poor gut health as the major contributing factor to the resistant germ. She suggested homemade kefir to restore the proper beneficial bacteria of the intentinal tract. She explained that anitbiotics kill off all bacteria, not just the bad ones. It was the first time I heard that approximately 80% of our immune system resides in the gut. Garceau also recommended her immunity syrup to encourage the health of the overall immune system.
The transformation was remarkable! After going to the doctor every four to six weeks for three years, my baby was better. As a matter of fact, with Cote’s help, I can proudly say that my daughter has not been to the doctor in three years! That’s what I’d call sustainable.
Health is a major factor in any sustainability equation. The use of local herbs and remedies for our health is a key component to the health of ourselves, our families and our planet. In Cote’s own words, “In order to have better health, you need proper nutrition, a connection to nature, herbs, and home remedies.”
Herbs have far fewer side effects than pharmaceuticals and in my experience are far more effective. So, go ahead, eat a weed…I dare you!
