Andrew Carnegie once said, “Any idea that is held in the mind that is either feared or revered will, begin at once to clothe itself in the most convenient and appropriate physical forms available.”
Many of us grasp that our thought patterns create our reality such as the quality of our experiences, our health, wealth, and the types of people we draw into our lives. We can’t stop thinking – we do so automatically – so, how can we harness this natural, powerful habit so that we can create results we love instead of fear?
Many people think to themselves, “I will be happy when I am rich, have the perfect relationship, the dream job or when the kids are grown and I have my freedom again!” Sound familiar?
In his book, The Law of Success, Paramahansa Yogananda advises us not to wait for our circumstances to change before we choose to be happy, peaceful or even successful! This is because our peace of mind, freedom, success, and happiness are not caused by our circumstances. Our circumstances are actually the effect of our thought patterns and the energy patterns we experience as emotions that influence our behavior which creates results. He writes: “You demonstrate success or failure according to your habitual trend of thought. In you, which is stronger – success thoughts or failure thoughts? If your mind is ordinarily in a negative state, an occasional positive thought is not sufficient to attract success. But if you think rightly, you will find your goal even though you seem to be enveloped in darkness.”
We must practice surrendering our negative, defeating thoughts and adopt thoughts that align with the power of Spirit and that reflect Universal Law – regardless of how negative our present circumstances may be. Again, Paramahansa Yogananda writes in the The Law of Success, “Universal Mind is perfect and knows no lack; to reach that never-failing supply you must maintain a consciousness of abundance. Even when you don’t know where the next dollar is coming from, you should refuse to be apprehensive. When you do your part and rely on God to do His, you will find that mysterious forces come to your aid and that your constructive wishes soon materialize… In order to receive His gifts you must eradicate from your mind all thoughts of limitation and poverty.”
Our thoughts are energetic – we live in a Universe of energy and like attracts like. Poverty thoughts in our mind create and attract examples of poverty in our physical reality. It takes great faith to overcome these habitual thought patterns – especially when we see the physical evidence of our fear thoughts with our eyes!
However, we don’t have to choose between spirituality and science when it comes to changing the way we use our minds. Acclaimed rocket scientist, Dr. Wernher von Braun was quoted in Bob Proctor’s best selling book, You Were Born Rich, “There would not be a single great accomplishment in the history of mankind without faith…Any person who strives to accomplish something needs a degree of faith in himself and when he takes on a challenge that requires more and more moral strength than he can muster, he needs faith in God.”
Many people bristle at the idea that faith in God can help us create this internal shift in thought that can transform our lives. Please feel free to substitute the term “God” for Spirit, Higher Power, Life Force Energy, Creator, Wise Mind, whatever resonates with you. The important element to understand is that our limited ego mind does not have the ability to change itself – it requires the power of something greater. This is why so many people struggle to change their beliefs on their own and then continue to blame their circumstances when their lives don’t change.
In his revolutionary book, The Biology of Belief, author and cellular biologist, Bruce H. Lipton validates through his scientific studies that both science and spirituality point to the same conclusions: “Your beliefs act like filters on a camera, changing how you see the world. And your biology adapts to those beliefs. When we truly recognize that our beliefs are that powerful, we hold the key to freedom. While we cannot readily change the codes of our genetic blueprints, we can change our minds…You can live a life of fear or live a life you love. You have the choice! It is not our genes but our beliefs that control our lives…”
Leave it to Mahatma Gandhi to sum it all up perfectly for us: “Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions. Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny.”
If you want to change your life, you must change the way you think about your life. Understand the energy of your thoughts and how those vibrations attract similar vibrations that become tangible things. Then, release your habitual negative thinking by surrendering it to a power greater than yourself, whether that is spiritual or natural. And finally, be willing to expect positive results and entertain peaceful thoughts as often as possible so that you can feel the positive effects of those thoughts as you create in your life.
