This past weekend brought the majority of the local establishments Halloween parties and celebrations, as the actual holiday this year, falls on a Wednesday evening. This way, if you are not able to get in costume and hit some parties mid way through your week, than this past weekend was for those fans and I hope no one missed out!
All over SW Florida, from Cape Coral to Naples and beyond I am sure, Halloween was officially celebrated initially this past weekend with parties and costume contests advertised. Some local bands also got involved in the costume game and this fan must say this was rather well done by one particular band.
Long Story Short took the stage at the Lani Kai Resort along the water of Ft. Myers Beach and the costumes worn were rather good! Rob, the bands singer, was in a Grim Reaper robe with shades, of course and Scotty Gleason (on guitar) was a combination of Frankenstein meets Elvis in the white suit. With the smoke, lighting and the guests in costume this was one of the better Halloween parties along the island on Saturday evening.
Long Story Short packs a set list that holds variety from rock covers, to some pop favorites and other ballads that can range from Led Zeppelin to Pearl Jam, and beyond.
The Cottage played host to the Drunk Monkeys and a large holiday crowd and The Beached Whale hosted The New Vinyls for the Saturday entertainment. This provided a solid evening for shooting images and sampling bands that do not always play our island regularly.
The New Vinyls sounded rather good at the Whale and had a good dancing crowd develop early on. They cover bands such as: Maroon 5, Sublime, Weezer and Wild Cherry on “Play That Funky Music”; however, they featured a female vocalist on this number and it was fabulous!
Sunday evening this weekend brought an early acoustic show at The Yucatan Beach Stand, featuring Timmy Johnston of 10,000 Views fame solo and acoustic. The show runs from 7:00 – 10:00 PM and it is indeed one to catch, as this week original music from 10,000 Views was stripped to bare acoustic ingredients and these were rather good! Some Foo Fighters were tossed in from Mr. Johnston for a lovely evening.
Soapy Tuna then brought their brand of sound to The Beached Whale stage around 10:00 PM, as it the standard Sunday at the Whale. Sunday was a bit of an earlier night for some guests along the island, as with the winds kicking it got on the cooler side temperature wise.
Also, a little later in the evening a former local music legend took the Dixie Roadhouse stage, when Twisted Method brought their live show back to local life. They hosted two opening acts and they were as follows: Day Minus 7 and Hawks with Rockets. Welcome back to the boys who originally escaped ‘Cape Coma’, only to no return to a home stage and tons of their local fans from over the years, as this band had gone silent and separate ways eight years ago.
Remember, Halloween is this coming Wednesday and that is Whale Wednesday with 10,0000 Views. Come out and celebrate Timmy and Andrea Johnston’s anniversary, throw on a costume and come to the Whale! Hope to see everyone out this coming week.
ROCK ON SW FLORIDA!!!!
