“La Llorona,” the most recent episode of NBC’s supernatural cop drama “Grimm,” featured an age-old legend that fit in perfectly with both Halloween and Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead. La Llorona, translated as the Weeping Woman, is a story about jealousy, revenge, murder and regret that has a long history in the Hispanic culture of Mexico, the United States, Puerto Rico and Central America.
According to legend, a woman named Maria was so in love with a man, that she was willing to sacrifice her children in order to be with him. She stabbed and drowned her children, only to be rejected by the man. When the woman refused to leave the man’s side, he slit her throat and dumped her body in the same lake she had drowned her children in. When she reached the gates of heaven, she was refused entrance because she could not answer as to the whereabouts of her dead offspring. She now wanders the countryside weeping and searching for her children.
The tale has often been used to warn children who misbehave, in the same way some parents warn their children of the Boogey Man. Other warnings involving La Llorona or the Weeping Woman concern being home before dark and to not chase after wealth and status from men who make promises they don’t intend to keep.
The woman who portrayed La Llorona on the ninth episode of “Grimm” was Angela Alvarado Rosa. Nick and Hank are assisted by former Albuquerque detective Valentina Espinosa as they search first for Rafael, a boy who has disappeared, and then a missing little girl. They try to figure out where the third child will go missing from, but soon learn a third child has already been abducted by a strange woman in white. Fortunately, they are able to reach the location La Llorona plans on drowning the three children and Nick struggles with her in the water and Hank and Valentina stay with children. Unfortunately, the woman disappears into the depths of the water and out of Nick’s grasp.
Monroe also had an eventful Halloween as he handed out candy and dealt with neighborhood bullies who tried to steal candy from a green witch and threw a rock through Monroe’s front window.
Juliette served as translator for Rafael’s father and while she was in his home, a neighborhood woman knew that Juliette is still recovering from being scratched by Adalind’s cat. The woman told Juliette she would have to choose between two men and Juliette adamantly responded she wasn’t choosing between anyone.
The next episode of “Grimm” airs on Friday, Nov. 2 and features another Grimm who doesn’t like the way Nick is doing things.
