“Grey’s Anatomy” returned to Channel 15 in Tempe on Thursday night, and now fans are being given the inside scoop on what’s next for Arizona and her story line. On Friday, September 28, TV Guide shared an interview with Jessica Capshaw about her character. If you missed any of the previously released photos or spoilers for this series, go here.
On the season nine premiere, Arizona was rarely seen. With the tears Callie cried during the episode, one might even think the character had also died in the plane crash or resulting aftermath. However, she lived, and it was revealed after Mark’s death that she lost her leg. Capshaw said the following about the loss and the impact it will have on her character:
“The writers and Shonda are obviously trying to tell good stories. It seems, in the many conversations that we’ve had, there was a real story here. It was an opportunity to tell a good story of something very profoundly difficult happening to Arizona. Now, we’ll see the story of how she comes to terms with that, how long it will be dark, and when it will get light again. Hopefully, it’s that whole thing about all the people in London and Seattle: When it rains all the time, that one day that you get that’s sunny is like the best day ever. I think that’s the idea.”
This loss will also have an impact on her relationship with Callie. Arizona will blame her partner for the loss of her leg, and her journey will include learning to come to terms with the fact her partner did all she could do to help Arizona keep her leg. The actress also teased the flashback episode that will air this week. She said the following:
“I think that it was surprising. I imagined that a lot of people thought we’d just go right back to the plane crash in the first episode, and I think that it’s kind of genius that it’s the second episode because you are going back to what’s actually happened, but seeing how it came to be. The next episode you definitely get a window into people showing themselves completely and clearly in extreme adversity, and that’s what the aftermath of the plane crash definitely did.”
Fans are buzzing about this series on social media. One fan said the following on Twitter recently:
I knew its gonna be heartbreaking! No more McSteamy.. RIP Mark Sloan. #greysanatomy T___T
