In episode 4 of “Grey’s Anatomy,” “I Saw Her Standing There,” Cristina (Sandra Oh) proved she was ready to move on by taking up with her boss, Dr. Parker (Steven Culp) in the bedroom.
In the episode that aired Thursday, October 25, 2012 at 8:00 p.m., Cristina has moved passed the stodgy boss-employee relationship she’d shared with Parker until now. While getting dressed after having sex, Parker asks Cristina about the upcoming surgery she is doing with the very senior Dr. Thomas (William Daniels). When she replies that the planned procedure will take 17 hours, Parker grins and murmurs, “Perfect,” leaving Cristina confused.
Cristina described the new relationship to her ‘person’, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) as Parker being her “sex friend.” When Meredith suggests this is a cry for help, Christina says she is trying to fit in to the new place and that it’s really a cry for an orgasm. Meredith asks ‘how’s that going’ and Cristina says, “Eh.”
While visiting with the patient about to have the arduous surgery, Cristina teases and makes jokes with Dr. Thomas, showing she has developed a soft spot for the older surgeon. Parker asks her if she recommended a more modern procedure to Thomas. When he learns that she did but Thomas shot it down, Parker is delighted. He tells Cristina to enjoy her time with Thomas while she can and walks away.
Later, while talking to Mer, Cristina realizes that Thomas doesn’t see it coming. She heads to Parker’s house in the middle of the night. He thinks it’s a booty call at first but what Cristina really wants to know is if he’s planning to fire Thomas.
He shares with Cristina that, due to his age, the hospital’s board wants to get rid of Parker. They feel because he isn’t up to date on the latest technologies, it is just a matter of time until he makes a mistake that results in a major lawsuit. They are looking for reasons to force him to retire. Cristina is upset by this news but even more so when she learns Parker intends to use her observations and testimony, if necessary, to help oust the man.
The next day, as surgery is about to begin, Parker asks why Thomas changed his surgical plan. Cristina plays dumb even though she is the one who goaded Thomas into changing it. Again, Parker is delighted as he knows Thomas has never used some of this equipment and is bound to make mistakes. Fortunately, he says, Cristina will be there to take of any problems but it is just what the board has been looking for – a reason to let him go.
Thomas does struggle with the procedure but Cristina talks him through it and the operation is a success. The news disappoints Parker but he invites Cristina to come over for another evening of sex. She declines because she is having drinks with a friend – something Parker encouraged her to do more of when she first arrived in Minneapolis.
The friend turns out to be Thomas. As they have their drinks, Thomas tells her he knows the board wants to get rid of him and has for some time. He says it’s been a long time since anyone paid any attention to him and it’s nice to have a friend again. Cristina encourages him to order a drink with alcohol in it and naturally he orders an ‘Old Fashioned.” Cristina busts up laughing and orders one too.
While Cristina’s ‘sex friend’ fling with her boss may be over, she seems to be finding her own way in Minneapolis. How will this affect her working relationship with Parker? Will Parker be even harsher with Thomas as a result? Tune in next week to find out what happens on “Grey’sAnatomy.”
