The McDonald’s at Greenwich Village, in New York, has a reputation for attracting a lot of trouble. The last thing anyone wants is a Big Mac and fries with a side of harassment. Sometimes trouble is something you can’t avoid and other times you run into trouble head on. No matter the circumstance it all has the possibility of turning dangerous as a mutilated 22-year-old gay man now knows.
Before we get into the most recent story of gay-bashing that happened Wednesday night, at this McDonald’s, let’s turn back the hands of time and remember the situation of Rayon McIntosh. Short and sweet, two women came in wanting to pay for their food with a fifty-dollar bill. When the cashier, Rayon McIntosh, told the women he would have to get approval to accept the bill the women became violent in which one of the women slapped Rayon in his face. Rayon pushed both women back. One woman jumped over the counter while the other walked to the other side of the counter to attack Rayon. Both women ended up behind the counter and that is when Rayon found a thin metal pole to beat both women giving them severe injuries. Rayon McIntosh was not charged with any crime and rightfully defended himself.
The reason this story is significant is because these women had no clue what they were getting themselves into by trying to double-team this man. Rayon McIntosh just got out of jail for killing a man when he was younger. When you make the decision to fight you have no clue who you are dealing with. These are the same circumstances surrounding this recent slashing of a young gay man, at that same McDonald’s, just this week.
According to police a young gay man was slashed in his face, back and neck by a heavy set man who instigated the disturbance between him, the victim and his partner. The incident started, in the restaurant, when the heavy set man taunted the young crossed man about being in the wrong bathroom. There were some words exchanged and when both gay men left the establishment the attacker followed in suit. The victim’s boyfriend swung at the suspect after he was verbally assaulted but missed. That is victim kneed the heavy set man in the groin and hit him in the face. That is when the heavy set man took out a razor and slashed the young man in several places.
This is the prime example why hotheads does not prevail. When you deal with such ignorance it’s best just to leave it be. When the two gay men left out the restaurant they should have kept walking instead of acknowledging the attacker’s insults. If they felt threatened they should have called 911.
By no mean is this column suggesting they were wrong in trying to stand up for themselves but as you see, that heavy set attacker had a razor and did not hesitate to use it. Not to mention he got away and the police are asking for any help in regards to this situation. He got away clean.
So LGBTQ remember, defending one’s self is understandable but your life is not worth losing because you have disrespectful people that want to test your resolve. Rather have caution and living than a hothead and dead.
