Looking to avenge their first loss of the 2012 NFL season, the division-leading (5-2) New York Giants travel to Arlington, TX, for an NFC East showdown with the (3-3) Dallas Cowboys.
Opening kickoff for this NFL week 8 battle is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. EST (3:30 p.m. CST) live from Cowboys Stadium and it’ll be broadcast live on FOX.
After opening the week listed as one-point underdogs, NFL week 8 odds makers have retorted by listing the G-Men (-3) as betting favorites by a field goal over the Boys (+3). The OVER/UNDER for this game has remained the same throughout, and is set at a combined total of 48 points.
For the Giants, despite their impressive 5-2 record, this team has been very mediocre in the “against the spread” betting department. Eli Manning & Co. enter week 8 with a 3-3-1 ATS record and are just 2-5-0 against the O/U. Nevertheless, that hasn’t deterred people from placing wagers on them this week.
This is evident by the fact that 71% of the betting population in Las Vegas – meaning 2709 out of the 3806 people surveyed – invested on the Giants this week. But don’t let those numbers fool you!
The truth is that, as one stated above, when opening lines for this game were announced, NY was actually a +1-point underdog. Personally, the Giants at Cowboys Stadium with a one-point cushion was a proposition one was willing to accept.
But with all the betting action being in favor of the visiting team, oddsmakers have had no choice but to change their numbers and list the NFC East leaders by -3-point favorites instead, which becomes very tricky.
Still like the Giants over the Cowboys by more than 3 points? Don’t make a move without first taking a closer look at New York’s most recent betting trends against the spread:
- Giants are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 games after accumulating more than 250 yards passing in their previous game.
- Giants are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games following a S.U. win.
- Giants are 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games after allowing more than 350 total yards in their previous game.
- Giants are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games overall.
- Giants are 37-15-1 ATS in their last 53 road games.
- Giants are 24-10-2 ATS in their last 36 games in October.
- Giants are 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. NFC East.
The way I see it is that this game has gone from a sure bet to a typical NFL week 8 picks trap. My safe, and there I say, smart bet would be to take the Cowboys with a +3-point cushion in this one.
Although, one does favor the Giants in this matchup, there’s so much on the line for the ‘Boys that they will come out ready to play and keep things from getting away from them in the scoreboard.
Either way it goes, whether it ends in NY or Dallas’ favor, the winner will likely be decided by less or equal to a field goal.
Take Dallas at +3 over the NY Giants in this NFC East showdown, because that way, whether the Cowboys can pull off the upset, or lose a highly-contested game, you find yourself covered against the spread!
