Every year, one Florida roller derby league graduates to the major leagues. Last year it was the Gainesville Roller Rebels; who, after years of struggling, found their stride and became a dominant force in Central FL. This year it was the New Jax City Rollers, who took Franky Panky by storm with a big win over the Gold Coast Roller Grrls. Their bout against the Cape Fear Roller Girls wouldn’t play out any differently; with Jax scoring a big 280-157 win against the Cape Fear Roller Girls.
To say New Jax decimated Cape Fear would be an understatement. Scoring 18 points with their first jam (18-1), before their power jams came into play. Jammers (and FL derby legend) Nuke (38-1), Miley Virus, and Fancy Schmancy all enjoying power jams that brought their team to nearly 100 points in the bout’s first ten minutes (73-1). (An interesting note about New Jax fans: they’re loud and fantastic even when their team is in no danger of losing. A tribute to Nuke’s fame, the crowd would chant “Nuuuuke!” every time she took to the track, no matter what the score was.)
Cape Fear’s Candi Capitate putting her team back on the board when she enjoyed her own power jam (114-20). This coup, along with some Cathlick Schoolgirl nickel and dime jams (114-23), followed by a gap-bridging Snuff Film Starlet power jam (114-52), immediately brought to mind Cape Fear’s own surprise victory over Tallahassee the day before. Cape Fear’s defense now rising to the occasion, keeping the jamming duo of Nuke and Miley Virus limited to small jams (118-61). Cape Fear’s Grace Riot stepping up and throwing Crash Register off her game (146-61) as the half ended: 162-61.
The bout’s second half had New Jax and Cape Fear going at it jam-for-jam. Starting off with a Nuke power jam (189-75), one that carried over into the next jam. Only this time a freed (and riled up) Ann T. Gravity blew past Jax’s Tera Bites and Dirty Rawkstar to match Nuke’s gains (211-83). A great Dixie Diesel, Hawaiian Puncher, Grace Riot wall bought Cape Fear enough time for Dirty San Jaz (214-99), Candi Capitate (214-102), and Cathlick Schoolgirl to push their team over the century mark (214-109).
New Jax answering Cape Fear with a plethora of (even more) power jams. Crash Register starting it off (227-109), Miley Virus continuing it (241-109), and Meow Mix Yo’ Face Up (255-109) capping it. Cape Fear’s last hurrah coming with Dirty San Jaz slaloming through 12 Gauge and Fancy Schmancy (264-136) before the last whistle brought the bout to an end: 280-157 – New Jax City Rollers
