A delightful part of the Fort Worth Cultural District’s Gallery Night is the Botanic Garden’s 5th Annual Art in the Garden Show. The juried show showcases diverse art created by talented local artists. This year the exhibit features works by 55 artists that includes paintings, jewelry, sculptures and photographs for sale. A “People’s Choice” selection will be announced Saturday night.
In 2008 The Fort Worth Garden Club (FWGC) decided to hold a juried art show to introduce more people to the beautiful Fort Worth Botanic Garden. Shortly after beginning the Art in the Garden Show, FWGC joined forces with the Fort Worth Botanical Society to help support and promote the arts in conjunction with the Garden.
The 110-acre Botanic Gardens, located just 3 ½ miles west from downtown Fort Worth, maintains 12 gardens. The Lower Rose Garden inspired by Italy’s Villa Lante is the perfect place for a wedding. Also perfect for a portrait photograph and an intimate wedding is the Oval Rose Garden featuring weather hearty roses. The Fuller Garden is both relaxed and formal. The Four Seasons Garden invites visitors to explore all year round. The Japanese Garden is a favorite among garden lovers who enjoy feeding the exotic Koi fish and strolling in the seven acres.
The 5th Annual Art in the Garden Show allows artists to use different subject matter rather than only garden themes. However the diversity of the gardens are inspiring on many levels for artists and nature lovers alike. For instance the Water Conservation Garden will soon feature more native and well-adapted plants for our area. The 10,000 sq. ft. conservatory features tropical plants including orchids, bromeliads and exotic trees. If limited to just garden themes any artist would have a wealth of ideas at FWBG, but leaving the show more open-ended allows for fun surprises. Last year’s attendees fell in love with a realistic close-up artwork of a gorilla enhanced by live plants placed alongside the artwork. He appeared to be peeking out of the bushes.
Fort Worth’s Gallery Night represents 38 art venues that open their doors to the public. A full list of galleries participating in Gallery Night can be found at the Fort Worth Art Dealer’s Association website.
