Have a long road trip to take but you don’t want to spend much on gasoline and you can’t afford a Tesla Model S? Ford announced on Tuesday that the Ford C-MAX Energi has been rated by the EPA as having more driving range than any “utility or compact vehicle”. This is accomplished in part through a 21 mile electric-only driving range, and a 47 miles/gallon fuel efficiency.
The Ford C-MAX Energi is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle based on a vehicle design Ford is bringing to America from Europe. In Europe the C-MAX is very popular as a gasoline or diesel vehicle. In North America, it will be sold solely with hybrid or plug-in hybrid drive trains.
It has a 21 mile electric-only driving range, and in electric mode the fuel efficiency is 108 MPGe. Adding the hybrid/gasoline driving range to the electric driving range, the total driving range for the C-MAX Energi is 620 miles. This beats the Toyota Prius plug-in driving range, 540 miles, by 80 miles. The third longest driving range is the Chevy Volt, whose 380 miles total driving range is a far cry from the C-MAX Energy driving range.
This driving range means the ability to drive from Detroit to New York, or from San Francisco to Las Vegas, or from Seattle to Twin Falls Idaho, on a single tank of gasoline.
“C-MAX Energi is America’s most efficient utility vehicle, a great symbol of how Ford gives customers the power to choose leading fuel-efficiency across our lineup with gas prices spiraling upwards of $5 a gallon in some parts of the country,” says John Davis, C-MAX chief engineer. “The C-MAX Energi’s leading range also means customers can spend more time on the road and more money on their priorities instead of at the gas pump.”
The 21 mile electric driving range is enough to cover 1/2 the average daily commute. That is, the average daily driving distance is 40 miles or so. It means the C-MAX Energi owner with an average commute would need access to charging at work to handle their full commute on electricity.
With 195 horsepower, it is more powerful than the Prius Plug-in.
The price for the C-MAX Energi is $29,995 after a federal tax credit.
“The C-MAX Energi is the first plug-in hybrid to combine significant electric only range with great overall range on a tank of gas,” says Davis. “We expect many C-MAX Energi customers will commute largely on electricity, yet will still have the range, space and flexibility to take a long road trip without stopping every few hours.”
