Football season has arrived. And football is more popular than ever.
According to the Nielsen Reports the popularity of football has grown and the sport is drawing more viewers. In fact, the 2012 Super Bowl was the most watched television show in U.S. history.
Football is not just for the guys
Football is no longer the sole domain of the male enthusiast as the NFL has attracted more female fans than any other sport. It is big business and a well planned marketing campaign has gotten the ladies cheering from the sidelines as well.
Our exalted sports legends, and the heroes now on the football field, are part of a league of exceptionally physically talented beings who have taken their skills to a professional level.
Motivation to exercise after the game is over
The physical discipline required to excel in sports could motivate the audience to examine their own goals of physical fitness. Men and women of different age groups are clearly roused to participate as a spectator. It could become the inspiration to participate in some planned fitness routines. Competition has a strong appeal, from the football field to the to the workout circuit, measures of achievement translate to victory.
However, it doesn’t seem to be the case, as according to the National Center for Health Statistics most Americans don’t exercise regularly.
Physical fitness might be the wrong concept.
Maybe the idea of fitness needs a makeover. Physical fitness implies that there are standards of achievement that determine our levels of fitness. What is wrong is that when we fall short of these standards, by definition we are unfit. Unfit is a loaded word. Inadequate, incompetent or inept is the message embedded in the concept of being unfit.
Motivation through humiliation and shame has no staying power. Once personal dignity is breached, the intact human spirit still seeks to find its’ reservoir of self trust. In an effort to improve folk’s physical capacities, messages have substituted form over function. Working hard, farming, cooking, cleaning, walking, building, playing and other ways the human body finds expression has endured for centuries. These are attainable, as each individual adapts within their physical capabilities and their creative inclinations.
The impressive volume of material created to provide a fitness blueprint for a healthy society is unwieldy and somewhat domineering. Explore a passion and find a purpose and take the steps to achieve your goals. Purpose and creativity are never stagnant. You can find your own way to become active and build on that foundation.
