Saturday evening brought an entirely different story as it was FGCU that handed down the onslaught to Southern Illinois U (SIUE). FGCU ran with Ryan Lynch starting in our net, as SIUE began with Jake Davis manning their goal also.
FGCU struck first in this game, as (#3) Andy Hanno sank the puck (9:24) past Davis to launch a lead that only continued for this squad. Good and solid play this game on both teams parts, puck handling still a plus for SIUE, as they also snagged their first goal in the first (1:54) as they entered the first intermission deadlocked at one each.
The second period was all FGCU on the ice, in their zone and in the net of Jake Davis. For twenty solid minutes…FGCU scored and expanded their lead significantly! All six goals of this period were only to FGCU to take a 7-1 lead heading into the final intermission.
With six total penalties in the second period, as opposed to only one in the first, safe to say this game sparked a hunger on both squads and things got more physical as the night went along. Given the DQ’s handed out Friday evening, tempers and elbows were flyin’.
FGCU Goals: (2nd period)
(#3) Hanno (18:50)
(#13) Johnson (18:12)
(#9) Gutowitz (11:06)
(#17) Richter (6:45)
(#5) Mccabe (5:56)
(#23) John (1:08)
This game was taken by FGCU rather early on and it simply continued through two solid periods of play. A complete reversal of action from Friday to Saturday evening for both opponents.
The third period did bring some life to SIUE, but it was simply too late in arriving. Even though SIUE scored four goals on Ryan Lynch, in the third, to get back in this game. It was not enough. FGCU also successfully scored two more goals to seal a 9-5 win over SIUE and a split in this series.
This game was rather enjoyable, as FGCU put out the fire that was Friday’s performance and showed Southern Illinois U what we have down here in Florida. Well done!
Next week FGCU hosts the Central Connecticut State University hockey team to Germain Arena. Game time starts at 6:00 PM on Friday, the 2nd and then at 9:00 PM on Saturday, the 3rd of October. The games are played in the blue rink on the recreational side of the arena.
