Matt Bomer, 34, has long been a fan favorite for the role of Christian Grey in “Fifty Shades of Grey” and his popularity is not slowing down. As of October 6, Bomer was obliterating the competition in a poll by The Daily Quirk, where he leads with 52% of the votes, second place is buried in his dust at 19%. On October 5, the notoriously private star stepped out in Beverly Hills for the 8th Annual GLSEN Awards. According to their website, “The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Network is the leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe schools for all students.”
Matt Bomer and his partner Simon Halls received the Inspiration Award at Friday’s ceremony. Matt Bomer is described as a “young but already accomplished actor” in the GLSEN press release seen below. These are words that could easily describe the successful Christian Grey, young and accomplished.
“Simon Halls and Matt Bomer are known for their commitment to family and causes they care for, including GLSEN. A young but already accomplished actor, Matt currently stars as Neal Caffrey on USA’s critically acclaimed show White Collar. Matt most recently starred on the big screen in Magic Mike alongside Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey and will star opposite Julia Roberts and Mark Ruffalo in the upcoming The Normal Heart. Other film credits include The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Flight Plan and In Time. Simon is a well-respected entertainment insider who is one of the chief publicists at Slate PR. Simon’s A-list client roster includes Ridley Scott, Sam Mendes, Ang Lee, Tom Ford, Jude Law, Annette Bening, Gore Verbinski, and Joe Wright. Matt and Simon live in Los Angeles with their three sons: Kit, Walker and Henry.”
Matt Bomer fans are rallying for the star who they believe best personifies Christian Grey. There has been some uproar regarding the actors sexual orientation but his supporters do not consider that an issue. After all, the fact is simple, Matt Bomer is an actor and that is what actors are supposed to do, portray characters and not themselves. PolicyMic.com reported that there is plenty of “evidence to support this cause.” They note that “Neil Patrick Harris, an openly gay actor, plays a womanizer in How I Met Your Mother. Conversely, Eric Stonestreet, who is straight, plays a beloved — and award winner — gay father on ABC’s Modern Family.” Bomer has been playing Neal Caffrey on “White Collar” since 2009 and he has had countless love interests on the show.
In June Matt Bomer spoke to E! News about equality in acting. “What we really have to do is stop the adjective before the job title—whether it’s ‘black actor,’ a ‘gay actor’ or ‘anything actor. Everybody thinks that equality comes from identifying people, and that’s not where equality comes from. Equality comes from treating everybody the same regardless of who they are. I hope the media and the press catches on to that because it’s time to move out of 1992.” Matt Bomer has not commented on the potential role of Christian Grey or the controversy which was started by Bret Easton Ellis who called him “too gay” to convincingly play the BDSM millionaire in “Fifty Shades”.
