Friday evening, it seemed the FGCU D2 squad was skating in more of a fast, catch-up fashion, where things get choppy and even sloppy with puck handling as Southern Illinois pretty much dominated the puck and zone for the greater part of the first period.
Goalie, Ryan Lynch, did have a rough night fending off shots; even though, in the end, FGCU actually out shot their guest this evening by almost a full twenty shots. This again, was simply the game of the opposing goalie, as he stopped more of less shots successfully.
FGCU went into the first intermission down by two goals and being out scored, as opposed to out played as a squad. Southern Illinois (SIUE) sank two pucks to seal a solid lead at (17:22) and (9:41), scored on Ryan Lynch of FGCU.
Lynch came out just three minutes into the second period, after he left the crease to assist in puck handling to only find himself double-teamed by two SIUE players where eventually, one of them sank the puck into our net for an easy three goal lead (17:07) too early in this period. Lynch was replaced by (#29) Otto Jaasko in the FGCU net.
(#1) Ryan Lynch left the game saving 12 of 15 shots and FGCU did not lead in shots on goal for the remainder of this game.
FGCU struck back (16:27) in the second when (#19) Steven Gutowitz sank the first for us against (#30) Jake Davis for South Illinois in net. Assisted by (#13) Kelly Johnson and (#20) Thomas Patterson.
This switch did not stop the onslaught launched by the SIUE squad, very early on in this game. They still scored one more (11:38) to take a four goal lead heading into the second intermission. Jaasko was warming up on a four goal deficit heading into the final period.
The third period brought a more heavier hitting game to where some tempers lead to fighting and a continuation following the call that brought disqualifications for both teams for the remainder of this game and possibly the series. Sitting Disqualifications went one to each team for this game; and a Series DQ handed to (#25) Erik Fritz for continuing to fight following the original call.
This final period also brought a late fire to the FGCU offense and this game was a bit more of a true competition; as within twenty minutes, they went from a three goal deficit–to a one goal down position that only fell to yet a three goal loss at the end of regulation.
(#3) Andy Hanno sparked the FGCU fire with scoring on Davis, assists to: (#10) D. Echeverri and (#19) Steven Gutowitz to spark any fight back. From there, the score simply went back and forth with each team taking two goals in the third to bring the final tally for Friday’s match to FGCU 3 and SIUE 6.
Could have been a roll of the dice, as we out shot their team the entire game and held less penalty minutes in a tally of FGCU only taking 6 of the 17 penalties handed out this match. That puck just was not getting past Davis in the Illinois net, period.
Southern Illinois ruled the stopping of the puck in this game with round two set for Saturday evening on Germain ice.
Saturday brought the final match between these two teams and next week, FGCU D2 faces Central Connecticut State University on home ice for a weekend series. Friday, November 2, 2012, game start time is early and the puck drops at 6:00 PM and Saturday’s start is slated for 9:00 PM. Both games are hosted at Germain Arena’s Blue Rink on the recreational side of the arena.
