The San Diego Chargers made a change at kicker on Sept. 29 when they signed Nick Novak to take over for a hurt Nate Kaeding. Here is a look at the fantasy football options for this weekend’s game between the Chargers vs. Chiefs.
San Diego Chargers
Philip Rivers – Philip Rivers is as inconsistent as he was in 2011. He has 688 passing yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. The good news is that he plays against a struggling Kansas City Chiefs team. Rivers is no longer a must-start in fantasy football, but is a good start this week.
Ryan Mathews – Ryan Mathews came back from injury in Week 2 and ran for 44 yards. Now, with a game under his belt, expect him to revert to his fantasy superstar status of 2011. Kansas City gives up 20 fantasy points a game to running backs and Mathews should be a high-level starter in Week 4.
Malcolm Floyd/Robert Meachem – Since Vincent Jackson left, the new No. 1 man in San Diego is Malcolm Floyd. He has one big game, with six receptions for 109 yards but has not scored a touchdown since Week 1. He is a low-level starter in most leagues in Week 4. Robert Meachem is a low-level reserve at best.
Antonio Gates – Gates has struggled at the start of the season. He has played two games and only has seven receptions for 65 yards. Fantasy owners want to start him, but he has burned them. This might be the week to get him back in your lineup against the weak Chiefs defense.
Kansas City Chiefs
Matt Cassel – While Matt Cassel is throwing for a lot of yards (807), he is horribly inaccurate, with three touchdowns compared to his four interceptions. San Diego does not have as great a defense as they used to have, but Cassel should not be started at all in fantasy football.
Jamaal Charles – Keeper league owners who kept Jamaal Charles finally saw the rewards of their patience in Week 3. Charles ran for 233 yards and a touchdown against the New Orleans Saints and looked as explosive as he was before his ACL tear in 2011. He will have a tougher time in Week 4, but is still a serviceable No. 1 runner for most fantasy teams.
Dwayne Bowe/Jon Baldwin – Dwayne Bowe is playing for a contract, and will no longer be with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013. So far, he has 18 receptions for 234 yards and two touchdowns on the year. He will be fine in Week 4 as well and is a quality starter as a No. 2 or 3 receiver. The Chiefs believe that Jon Baldwin should be Bowe’s replacement but has done little to warrant that trust this season. Keep him benched.
Tony Moeaki – Moeaki has six receptions for 58 yards in three games and should not be starting in any fantasy football league.
