Our adventure for The Year of Alabama Food began in Huntsville, continued with a lovely drive from Decatur, and then on to Birmingham, approximately 83 miles south via I-65.
Meandering along the interstate and passing through several tiny burgs, you really gain an appreciation for the beauty of The Heart of Dixie. Ascending one last hill and over a ridge, the city started to come into view. I bestowed all of the buildings and such on both sides of the highway just a passing glance, knowing that we would take it all in later that night and over the weekend, as we were on the way to our next home away from home in Alabama’s Shannon Valley.
The Magic and Majesty of Ross Bridge
Rising like a royal palace and surrounded by towering trees, charming walking and biking trails, beautiful rolling hills, woodlands, lakes, and a quaint, classic American residential neighborhood, the Renaissance Birmingham Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa exudes luxury and elegance at every turn.
Named “One of the Top 500 Hotels in the World” by Travel + Leisure magazine twice, Ross Bridge is a four diamond resort with 11 spacious suites, 259 upscale residential-style guest rooms, each with its own a private balcony, and a wealth of amenities.
Your warm welcome to the resort begins in the stunning two-story lobby area with a living room-style sitting area and inviting lounge/bar with light jazz emanating softly in the background just beyond.
To me, the resort resembles a combination charming mountain lodge, historic castle and comfortable craftsman-style home all rolled into one, highlighted by beautiful limestone flooring, dark cherry woods and sophisticated accoutrement. It’s quite amazing that as spacious and luxurious as the resort is, it still has a very boutique, intimate feel – a real rural escape with urban sophistication.
For recreation there is an indoor pool and Jacuzzi, fantastic outdoor pool with fountains, a bridge, kid slide, and churning grist mill set amidst massive stone boulders with views of the soaring trees behind. The upper level deck overlooking the pool is intimate enough for two, but large enough for a group with comfortable oversized furniture and fire pits for warming your feet and heart with an evening beverage.
Tennis courts, a badminton lawn, bikes for exploring the surrounding trails and a sizeable health club with separate, fully complementing, state-of-the-art cardio and weight rooms offer other fitness options.
