It is always an honor to highlight the accomplishments of a small business owner. This Small Business Spotlight is for the talented publisher, Jamal Jones of Jones Worldwide and Experience Reality Magazine based out of Washington, D.C. This publication is garnering national and local to DFW exposure for bridging the gap for local artists and entertainers. Jones was kind enough to let quadrust.com readers know more about his publication, Experience Reality Magazine.
When did you start your business and why did you start your business? – Experience Reality Magazine was started in 2004 with the purpose of proving to the African American community that you can do anything you choose to do as long as you are willing to put in the necessary work to succeed.
What does your business offer and what is your target market? – The Magazine offers enlightenment and entertainment to readers. We are also a vehicle for small businesses to expose themselves to new customers. Our target market is African American men and woman from the ages of 25 to 45.
How is your business different from others in your industry? – Experience Reality differs from other magazines because we provide national magazine quality to a local market. Simply put what the larger more recognizable publications offer we do it for our local area so our readers are impressed and love reading the Magazine. We also provide the same format that national magazines charge but for free.
How are you meeting the needs of your clients in today’s economy? – We are meeting the needs of our clients by providing our publication in a print format and a digital format that can be emailed and posted on social networks. So if our readers can’t subscribe to our publication or buy an edition then we send it out to their emails through our online email subscription.
How is your business model benefiting your overall business plan? – We are constantly adjusting our business model to fit the changing times and economics of our target audience. We evolved from print to online and print. We also have other avenues to increase exposure and generate advertising revenue.
How do you market and advertise your business? – We believe in a diverse marketing mix using email blasts, Facebook marketing, Twitter, street team promotions, event marketing, radio and video commercials, which are circulated through YouTube. Whatever medium out there that will benefit us and our advertisers we use to make sure we are maximizing our advertising.
Where do you see your business in the next 2-5 years? – In two years we would like to have the free monthly publication distributed in several cities along the East coast. We also will consider branching into other regions so we can be all encompassing of enrichment and entertainment around the country.
What advice do you have for other small business owners? – Don’t give up. Observe every lesson and adjust accordingly.
