To all of you 80’s generation people out there, one of your favorite parks is aging right along with you. This Monday, October 1st, Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center turns thirty years old. From the day Walt Disney thought of that wonderful “giant golf ball” to now, a lot has changed at Epcot.
Do you remember the World of Motion? Well, Test Track took its place and is now nearing its date of unveiling a refreshed and refurbished ride. How about before Ellen joined Bill Nye on the Universe of Energy? What was once a quite boring intro into a cool land of dinos is now a lot more entertaining. What about Veggie Rock Concerts? Now, you can go Soarin’ from Florida to California in under one minute (depending on the wait in line and if you have a Fast Pass). Figment used to run Journey into the Imagination with the Dream Finder. Finally, what was once Sea Base Alpha is now a charming underwater adventure with Finding Nemo.
Yep, Epcot has changed right along with us. You may remember a time when you were very small and perhaps Epcot was your least favorite. Now, you enjoy sampling fares and drinks from around the world in the World Showcase, complete with authentic hosts and hostess. In fact, you may even enjoy riding Space Ship Earth (in the giant golf ball) on a journey through time, or appreciate further the amazing Illuminations spectacle that takes place every evening at 9 p.m. Sure, riding all the rides at Magic Kingdom is always going to be on your list, but there is definitely something special about Epcot.
Whatever it is that draws you to Epcot, this Monday is no exception. In fact, Epcot is celebrating its 30th with some cool events (Disney Blog):
Designing the Future-Past and Present (1-2 p.m.)- Join Disney Imagineers as they reminisce about “tomorrow” over the past thirty years.
America’s Commemorative Moment (3 p.m.)- America Gardens Theater will host appearances by Disney celebrities with a special reflection of Epcot over the past thirty years. (Get there early if you want a seat!)
Epcot: How it Changed theWorld (4:30-8:00 p.m.)-Join Marty Sklar as he shares some of Epcot’s majesty and mystery with you, the guest!
Anniversary IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth (9 p.m.)- Enjoy a special edition of arguably the best firework show on the Walt Disney World property.
In addition to the special touches on Monday, guests can enjoy commemorative (limited edition) purchases, such as the World Showcase 30-year t-shirts!
Whatever you choose to do, this is definitely a time to celebrate. And hey, what a great way to kick off the Food and Wine Festival!
