As hurricane Sandy approaches the east coast, Mayor Bloomberg called a state of emergency, which called for the evacuation of New York’s low-lying areas. In past years people would have to make the tough decision to save their lives which would mean they would have to leave their beloved animals behind, or stay and risk all their lives in a disastrous situation. This was because disaster shelters did not allow pets. Hurricane Sandy changed that policy and disaster shelters are opening their doors to people and their pets in need.
