Every item that you purchase has an impact on the environment. For those that are concerned with minimizing the impact that they have on the world, the choices are not always clear. In today’s society it is easy to purchase an item without particular regard to where it came from, the process that is required to produce it, or its overall environmental impact on the Earth. One way that you can minimize your environmental impact is to buy items that have been produced in an environmentally friendly way.
Each step in the production of any product contributes to it’s environmental impact. All steps including the way that the raw materials are produced, harvested or mined, processing the raw material, assembly of the final product, shipping and storage until consumer consumption must be looked at carefully if one wants to reduce their environmental footprint when purchasing any product.
It can be particularly difficult to discern whether or not the clothes that you buy are environmentally friendly or not. Traditionally the clothing industry has not been overly concerned with it’s environmental impact. Chemicals used to treat and process fabric and for screen printing are not known for being environmental friendly. Now all of a sudden out of the shadows strolls Earth Junkie.
Conceived in the mind of an environmentally conscious construction worker the idea for a more environmentally friendly clothing line came to fruition in March of 2011. The Earth Junkie label was created out of a desire to raise awareness for the environment through fashion. The clothes are made of bamboo and organic cotton. The shirts are digitally printed using water colors which results in a nontoxic durable print that won’t crack or fade. The materials are minimally processed leaving the fabric in the raw resulting in more durable and stronger clothes. Fabric can be weakened by the ordinary procedure of bleaching, dyeing and processing with harsh chemicals. With double stitched seams these clothes are designed to stand up to an active outdoor lifestyle. To date the Earth Junkie clothing line consists of long and short sleeve shirts but there are plans to add other articles of clothing in the future.
The following is an excerpt from Earth Junkie’s Facebook Page.
Just by changing what you wear you will be supporting sustainable clothes, an all American company with all American made products. Our watercolor screen printing contains no plastisols or heavy metals making it the safest on the market. You can’t even feel the screen printing on the shirt. Our apparel is made sweat shop free. By wearing our clothes you will not only be supporting American made products, you will also be supporting our economy, saving American soil from contaminates, saving our planet and helping our future generation learn basic eco friendly practices.
Like many wonderful things on this planet Earth Junkie can only be found in a few places. As of now Earth Junkie can only be purchased directly from the clothing line’s creator; Kit Freeman or at Sacks Outdoors formerly Sacks Army Store located at: 200 East Pine Street, Hattiesburg, MS 39401.
