An annual tradition, the Festival of the Masters is an arts community weekend held throughout the Downtown Disney area at the Walt Disney World Resort.
Presented by Michaels, the Festival of the Masters showcases art in different media, including paintings, photography, sculpture, clay, jewelry, glass art and mixed media. There’s even chalk art created over 1,000 square feet of sidewalk during the weekend.
Visitors to the festival – art lovers, Disney collectors, families and Orlando locals – can enjoy the sights, atmosphere and free entertainment of the Downtown Disney arts event as well as purchase artwork and festival merchandise.
This year’s Festival of the Masters takes place Nov. 9 -11.
Festival of the Masters features award-winning and emergent artists
Nearly 150 award-winning artists participate in the festival. New this year is an Emerging Masters area featuring more than 30 juried artists who will compete for awards.
Several non-Disney Downtown Disney venues also will participate. House of Blues will present grassroots and funk art by approximately 35 local and national folk artists. Raglan Road will showcase the work of Graham Knuttle, Irish painter and sculptor. Curl by Sammy Duvall will spotlight artists who create custom TOMS shoes.
Festival of the Masters showcases Disney art
Many Disney fans visit the Festival of the Masters specifically to see Disney artists and to purchase collectibles.
At Disney Artist Village, at Pleasure Island, will offer Disney character art from across the company, including Walt Disney Imagineering.
Art of Disney, at Downtown Disney Marketplace, will feature Dave Avanzino; he will create art inspired by Disney theme parks, based on prop-like element and fonts from signs and attractions. Artist appearances will happen at both locations throughout the weekend.
D-Street, at Downtown Disney West Side, will display Vinylmation from Disney artists.
Festival of the Masters is a Downtown Disney family event
As a community arts and family event, Festival of the Masters also offers live music, performances and family entertainment and activities. Guest can express themselves creatively through “Make It Take It!” crafts, get glamorous with a DIY fashion show, and help put the pieces together in a “Michaels Master Mural.”
Children may be especially drawn to the chance to make their own sundae magnets at Ghirardelli’s Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop or to help build an 8-foot tall LEGO Hulk figure or LEGO interactive mural at the LEGO store. Or they may enjoy the complementary face painting offered by the talented hands of technicians of Cirque du Soleil’s “La Nouba.”
Other activities over the weekend include performances by “La Nouba” Cirque du Soleil performers, dominoes at Fuego, live music at House of Blues and Bongos Cuban Café.
Hours for the 2012 Festival of the Masters at Downtown Disney are Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The event, as well as self-parking at Downtown Disney, is free.
