Having announced that Season 8 will be the last season of Dexter it was expected that this season will be the beginning of the end and with Season 7’s premier Dexter has started with a bang. We pick up exactly where Season 6 left off. Dexter (Michael C. Hall) drives his knife into Travis Marshall’s (Colin Hanks) chest and puts an end to the Doomsday Killer. Just as he does so Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) shows up and catches him in the act. At first she doesn’t appear to realize it is Dexter, but after a moment he talks her into lowering her gun. Deb, understandably, wants to know what is going on. Dexter thinks quickly and tells her that he came here, as per her orders, to do one more forensic sweep. He walked in on Marshall who attacked him. He fought him off, knocked him out and then “snapped.” He tied Marshall down and killed him.
Debra relaxes slightly and tells Dexter that she will call it in and they can get him the best lawyer in town. He stopped the guy in self-defense and had a moment of temporary insanity. Dexter convinces her not to do so. There is no good way for that scenario to end. They can make it look like a suicide and then burn the place down. Nobody will know the difference. Deb, reluctantly, goes along with it. They light the place on fire and leave.
Early the next morning both are called to the scene at the church where Detective Anderson (Billy Brown) is handling things. Dexter gets to work while Debra steps in and deals with the press and talks to the other detectives. Everyone is happy that Doomsday is finally dead, but Deb is clearly having problems lying. Dexter notices her struggles and tries to help her out, but there is only so much he can do. While at the scene LaGuerta finds Dexter’s slide.
Debra finds herself thinking back to the crime scene and she starts asking Dexter about the details. Where did the plastic come from? Where did he get those knives? Dexter tells her some of the stuff was there in storage and some of it he keeps in his car as part of his blood spatter “kit.” She doesn’t seem too convinced. That evening Anderson calls Debra and has his own worries about the scene. He wants to know how Marshall got there and where his car was. Debra gives him the go ahead to look into it. Right after hanging up with her he stops to help a motorist who has a flat tire. The driver of the car looks nervous. When Anderson opens the trunk to get the tire iron he sees the body of a dead girl. The car’s driver stands up, pulls a gun and executes Anderson then takes his car and drives off.
The team, Deb, Batista (David Zayas), Quinn (Desmond Harrington), Masuka (C.S. Lee), LaGuerta (Lauren Valez) and Dexter are working the scene where Anderson was killed. They have the girl’s body, but no prints. Dexter takes a print off the turn signal. Later, back at the lab, he runs the print and eventually finds a hit on the Interpol site for it. The guy is a Russian mobster Victor Baskov. Some quick thinking leads Dexter to realize the guy is likely to skip town and fly back to Russia as soon as possible. He decides that what he needs, what will make him feel better and centered is to kill. Baskov will be his target.
Before he can go Debra pulls the files from the Ice Truck Killer case and realizes that the way Dexter had Marshall tied down was the exact same way the Ice Truck Killer had her tied down. She confronts Dexter about some more of the details and he has a few answers, but ultimately tells her there are no good answers.
Back at the station LaGuerta asks Masuka if they make blood slides at the scene. He tells her never, they take swatches. He even joking said the only person who made slides was Dokes, the Bay Harbor Butcher. LaGuerta pockets the slide and leaves.
As Dexter heads for the airport to intercept the Baskov, he stops to get gas. All of his credit cards are declined at the pump due to the handiwork of his babysitter’s boyfriend and Ice Truck Killer fan Louis. Dexter caught him using his computer, but he didn’t realize he was getting his personal information off of it. Before Dexter headed out he grab his getaway bag that has some clothes, a few passports and some cash. Dexter is worried if Deb doesn’t stop bugging him he will have to use this for good and disappear.
Dexter arrives at the airport and is able to subdue and dispatch Baskov. While he is out on his boat disposing of the body and getting his Zen back Debra calls his house and gets the babysitter Jamie (Aimee Garcia). She tells Deb that Dexter is working late. When Deb asks if he does this often Jamie tells her that he works a lot, often until three or four in the morning.
Dexter dumps the body and feeling better heads for home. As he walks in Debra is sitting in his living room. She has his knives, the hand from the Ice Truck Killer, his slides, his clothes and all of his gear laid out all over the living room. She asks him point black if he killed all these people. Knowing he is caught he tells her that he did. She asks if he is a serial killer. After a pause and some clear struggle he says, “Yes.”
